Why Would a Woman Waste her College Education?BY: Guest | Category: Women | Post Date: 2010-02-02
Erin was sitting in the cafeteria at her college. She was majoring in journalism and had a plan in mind that she would work with a television news station after graduation as a newscaster. Her parents were helping her pay for college, but she planned on paying them back for most of it once she had established herself in her career. When Monica sat down next to her in the cafeteria and they began talking about their long-term plans, Erin was floored. 'I want to be a mom.' Monica had planned out her high school classes so that she could get into this college. She had done everything that Erin had done to get the best scholarships, the most fitting school, and the best grades once she was in college. But nobody would be reading Monica's resume. Monica had no plans to create one. Instead, she chose a degree program that she believed would give her the skills and tools necessary to give her kids the best mom they could have. Erin's story sounds normal. Most students who go to college have a specific career path in mind. Starting as early as middle school, academic counselors and parents give their kids tips and ideas for how to get into the best college so that they can get a job that not only pays the bills, but that they will enjoy. That's one of the reasons why Monica's story seems so confusing. Why would anyone want to spend so much time and resources on a degree that won't pay for itself later on? For a dead end? A lot of this sentiment stems from the women's liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s. The women of that era were fighting for their rights. They saw the inequality that our society was doling out to them, and they took action to change it. And change it they did. Today, people don't even think twice about a woman's right to vote, speak for herself, own land, or pretty much do anything else in our society. A college education and a career are included (granted, there is still inequality in some areas. Most applicable to this issue is the salary gap that exists between women and men of similar experience, education, job requirements, and seniority). However, one of the key issues of the women's liberation movement has been forgotten; the movement was about the woman's rights. It sounds simple. Not many people in Western society would admit to believing that women shouldn't have the same rights as man, but the application of these rights have changed. The right that was won is for a woman to choose to vote, to choose her career path, to choose her education, et cetera. Instead, what we have been left with is a society that looks down on women who decide to stay home with their kids, leave their careers to make a home for their family or husband, or go to college for the sake of becoming a better woman for her children. Monica's choice is a direct result of the woman's liberation movement. She chose what she believes will be best for her family (once she has one). The real test of our society will be how we respond to women who make similar choices.
