Win Some, Lose Some... in Your CareerBY: Eve | Category: Careers | Post Date: 2009-11-22
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a bank teller, a teacher and a pilot. When I finally graduated from college I didn't become any of these. My first job was being a customer service employee with an insurance firm. So as you can see, I didn't have a clear career path for myself. Honestly, I didn't even plan for one. So in every interview I went to, I was always asked the same question a lot of times; "So, what's your career plan for the next five years?" The first few times I was asked this question I would give a fairly good answer like "Oh, if I am joining your company, I'd like to be promoted to supervisor, then a manager and in between I may take up further studies, work on my masters and get involved in some charity work..." so impressive that the HRD officer's facial expression showed interest, a hint of admiration with the toothpaste smile included, too. Well, I got the job, got promoted to supervisor and stayed on for 5 years. I didn't work on my masters, wasn't able to do charity work and didn't become a manager because there was no vacancy for one at that time. I've been asked this same question again these past several months when I applied to an ad and I was tempted to say " I don't have any career plan at the moment. I'll take whatever is offered to me..." something like that, but then again I didn't actually say this but just said something intelligent to make a good impression on the manager. Well, I got the job but resigned after two weeks because I didn't feel happy with it. I would like to think that I 've had a pretty good and professional career. I have enough years of experience in customer service that may qualify me for the customer's choice award. I was also able to do partial teaching since I took part time work as a tutor. There were other jobs I liked - as section head of the customer services department of a computer company, as administrative assistant for a legal office , as recruitment officer of a call center company; yet I was not able to get any of these jobs. Somehow I felt I lacked some skills or there was another person more qualified for the job. In other words, somebody was better than me! Oh, well... That said, I know how it feels to have ups and downs, maybe you have experienced it,too. Okay, fret a little bit but don't over do it that you would be feeling so sorry for yourself. Give yourself time to think clearly, analyze things, then move on...or better yet make a plan ..yes, you heard that right... plan your next move to get hired. Your career makes up half of your life- if you want to be successful with it, you just have to work hard and focused to get it done. Always think you are a winner even if you lose some opportunities, and think that you will never be a loser because you were not born to be one. Write 'winner' in your resume because you are one and you will always be as long as you put your mind to it. That's a good way to start your career path !
