A medical procedure known as Tubal Ligation is a method of birth control. The procedure requires the doctor to tie up the woman's tubes to prevent unwanted pregnancy. There are women who have chosen this procedure over birth control pills. Though this method has become popular, a lot of complaints have been brought about by women who underwent this procedure. The condition brought about is generally known as Post tubal Ligation Syndrome wherein the woman complains about the negative effects that were experienced after the procedure was done.

The physical and hormonal changes in the woman's body may be considered as factors for the post tubal ligation syndrome to happen. PTLS, as it is commonly known may cause some distress, trauma and strain for the woman. All these may become negative feelings that would make the woman feel helpless, uncomfortable and stressed out.

Most complaints would dwell on some physical aspects like vaginal itching and dryness, menstrual bleeding and some physical discomfort. Some symptoms may be similar to menopausal signs such as sudden mood swings, hot flushes and anxiety attacks. There are also complaints about some memory slip-ups, increased feelings of dejection, despair and misery. There is also lack of interest for physical intimacy because of experienced pain during sexual contact. There is also the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, though this is not really a symptom in itself.

Most doctors regard the mentioned symptoms due to the hormonal changes in the body. Others deem that there is a possibility that the tubal ligation affected the blood circulation in the woman's production system like the ovaries and uterus. If so, then doctors surmise that some damage may have been done to the blood vessels which further cause hormonal imbalances to occur. Other doctors also think that the syndrome is just part of the psychological effects that may possibly happen after ligation was done. Yet, all these are non-conclusive and there are no definite answers to support these different views.

The treatments for the PTLS may vary. These are generally based upon the doctor's professional opinions and recommendations. There are also professional inputs provided by other medical practitioners as well. Treatments may come in the form of anti-depressants, anti-stress medications and regular psychological counseling.

Suffice to say, most doctors strongly recommend that before a woman undergoes post tubal ligation the procedure must be fully discussed by the doctor. There should be an Awareness Program for all the women to know the pros and cons of this procedure so they would know what they are getting into.
