Writing as a GhostwriterBY: Eve | Category: Writing | Post Date: 2009-12-02
A professional writer who gets paid to write books, articles, stories, reports, or other content that are officially credited to another person is known as a ghostwriter. Executives, political leaders and even celebrities often hire ghostwriters to write or proofread their books, magazine articles, or other written copy. The ghostwriter may sometimes be acknowledged by the author or publisher for their writing services. The distribution of work between the ghostwriter and the recognized author differs a great deal. There are some cases wherein the ghostwriter is hired to print and edit a rough draft or an almost completed content. In some cases, the outline, ideas and many of the words in the finished book or article are those of the credited author. In most cases, a ghostwriter does most of the writing, making use of ideas and stories provided by the credited author. In this case, a ghostwriter will have to do a lot of research on the credited author or their topic of expertise. It is unusual for a ghostwriter to prepare a book or article with no contribution from the credited author; at a minimum, the credited author usually writes down a basic outline of ideas at the outset or provides suggestions on the ghostwriter's final draft. Ghostwriters are hired for many reasons. In many cases, the clients who hire them do not have the time and writing skills to write and research about a book they want to publish or write about. Even if the client has the writing skills to do a short article, they may not know how to organize and edit a book that is interesting and well-paced. In other cases, publishers use ghostwriters to increase the number of books that can be published each year under the name of popular, very profitable authors. In hindsight, I was a ghostwriter for many months. I was given topics to write about based on the instructions of my employer. I was into ghostwriting because I discovered that I could write articles that people find interesting enough. My employers paid well for my writing services. It was only by accident that I found my articles online when I was surfing the net for some research material. I clicked on a topic familiar to me and ...there it was…. my article was flushed before my eyes and I was reading it! That was the first time I saw my article published officially online and I was really thrilled about it. I found out that there were 18 articles 'credited' to the author, when actually they were really my articles. Unfortunately, my name didn't appear in those articles so.... that was that! I'm still writing as a ghostwriter for some of my writing projects. I don't really mind because I'm paid well enough to forego that kind of thinking inside me. But then, sometimes, it's nice to be recognized for some good work you've done thru your own name. That said, I am happy to be writing on this site. It feels great to see my name as the writer of the articles I wrote here. Right here, I'm not a ghostwriter. I'm a real article writer who exists!
