"Did you know that Tom is visiting Sally? I would stay away from her if I were you. . ."

"Sarah is hanging out with her Aunt Flo. We should probably give them a few days before we interrupt."

If you're a man, these statements may sound pretty mundane. Most women readers, however, will understand right away what these are referring to. I'd like you to meet Tom and Flo: a woman's time of the month, and her menstrual flow.

There's a reason why people speak in riddles when it comes to a woman's menstrual cycle. Aside from it not being the best dinner-table conversation (ew!), you also run the risk of inciting the fury of a woman who is already riding an emotional roller coaster.

Despite the warnings, however, it never fails: men will attribute his wife or girlfriend's attitude to her period. Period. This comment, if dared spoken out loud, almost is guaranteed to be responded to with indignation, appall, and the most vehement denial known to mankind.

A few days later, though, it is often discovered that the man's intuition was right.

Why does it bother us so much when men attribute our actions and emotions to our menstrual cycle? I think that it has a lot to do with our sense of self. If you have a feeling or emotion that you intentionally express, you want it to be understood, right? When woman are going through the menstrual cycle, they often find that their emotions are heightened. The things that just a week ago they could have ignored, all of a sudden become major issues that must be dealt with promptly. And why not? Our feelings are just as valid today as they were last week, right? What about that short passage of time makes my opinions less valid? What makes me less of a person?

Nothing. And that's the problem. If us women could separate our emotions from our intellect for that brief week during our cycle, we wouldn't have a problem. Somehow, if we could automate our responses and realize that our emotional dial has been cranked up, our relationships wouldn't suffer as much. But boy, do they. If you doubt that fact, just turn to any of our sitcoms and look for themes about Auntie Flo. She's there, and she's making a ruckus. Comedy is one way that we are able to survive painful things. When men have to deal with a woman who is under the influence of hormones, he is trapped. He can't bring it up to her, because then she will deny it and accuse him of not paying attention to her real feelings. He can't ignore it, because it is far too real to set aside. So instead, our society has given him some assistance. By watching sitcoms that deal with this issue, the woman is able to get a glimpse of what it is like on the other side. Even though there is hyperbole in the television show, she realizes what it must be like for her beloved to deal with the mood swings, and hopefully she is able to take this into account the next time Flo comes for a visit.

But don't expect her to admit it. How dare they make fun of such a painful time for a woman, anyway?
