As far as I recall my family had pets like cats, chickens, pigs, a turkey, some goats and a lot of dogs. We had 14 dogs scattered all over the house area inside and out. You can just imagine the noise all these dogs made together with the other pets we had then.

Right now, I have five dogs named after famous people- Mutt and Jeff, Jack and Jill and finally Rambo. They all grew up together coming from a single mommy dog who has gone to dog heaven. I'm proud of these five dogs because I personally took care of them. I fed them extra milk, petted them, rubbed their bellies and sweetly talked to them as they fell asleep. They're now about a year old and I consider them as well-behaved dogs.

When my dogs were about 5 weeks old and were steadily walking and playing around, I decided to teach them some easy tricks. The first trick I wanted to teach them was shaking hands. So each day I would take turns with each puppy and say my famous repetitive line " How are you, Jack?" then I would take its right paw to shake with my right hand. I repeated this action for each puppy about six times and I allotted about an hour of session for them to learn this trick. I did this lesson everyday for about two weeks taking turns with each puppy. Well, my patience finally paid off when I came home one time and as I entered the gate leading to the garage, Rambo was the first puppy to greet me..and to may surprise Rambo was extending his right paw to me, so I reached out and gave my right hand. I was really happy, and the rest of the puppies were also able to do the same trick. I had to shake each paw that was extended to me. I gave them good pats on their heads and fed them extra doggy food.

The second trick was teaching them how to sit down. I had to always place my hand to press down their hind legs to make them sit still. I said the word 'sit' every time I wanted them to do this position. This time it took about a week for all my puppies to learn this trick...and they were only about two months way back then!

My dogs still know how to shake 'hands' or paws and sit when told to. They have learned other tricks like 'sleep', stay away, stay out, and behave'. I think I was able to teach them how to scratch the gate if they wanted to go out. If they wanted to go in, my dogs had to bark to let me know that they want to come in....although there was a time when my dog Jill was able to press the doorbell..hmmm...

You see, dogs are intelligent enough to be taught tricks and other good things. Love them and take care of them and they would give back the same love..unconditionally....with no tricks at all !
