Search engine rankings are not exactly like your school grades and class ranks. Search rankings are more driven by your popularity than your hard work. Remember that stylish girl of your high school who spent more time with boys and barely managed pass marks in board exams? You always must have consoled yourself by saying that, yes the girl is popular but I carry better rank than her. But if your school was internet and the subject being search engine, then that popular girl of your school would have ranked number one. And why is that? Its because your ranking in internet search engine is decided by your popularity more than any thing else. If you are popular you will be the king. Now the question is how to be popular in internet. This is slightly tricky; you may not be very popular in internet but can still end up proving your self one. And how is that? I will again give you an example. I hope most of you know David Beckham, the icon of football. I always rated him as a very average player, of course except for his ‘swinging & bending kicks'. His overall game was pretty mediocre; you cannot compare him with idols like Pele, Mara Dona or even Ronaldo's. But you will appreciate the fact that Beckham had a very good marketing strategy working for him. Till today he is one of the highest paid footballers of all time. He must have done some thing right that fetched him so much money, and what is that? Though he was not such a great footballers but he managed to prove himself to be one. It will be an exaggeration but to explain you clearly I will use the sentence -he fooled us to believe that he is one of the greatest footballers of all time-. This is exactly what we need to do with the search engines. You may be a one page website with scrap written on the pages, but you can still manage to fool search engines by proving your self very popular. You may have no quality content but still end up raking in the first page of the search results. There is no one way to prove that your website in more popular than the other. The parameters that search engines consider to rank a webpage high consist of enormous set of algorithms that may be difficult for us to grasp. On internet, you will find numerous articles claiming one parameter being more important than other. But let me tell you, even those gurus are not sure of their claims. But I will like to play another guru here. I will not make any claims, rather I will like to make you aware what Google has made very obvious but we seem to underestimate this factor. When ever we talk about Google search engine ranking, another aspect always surfaces out on top, and that is Google Page Rank. A higher Google page rank can ensure high search ranking. Page rank is decided by Google by judging the popularity of the website. Google does the analysis of popularity by ‘counting the number of relevant back links points into the webpage'. By increasing the count of back links to your website, can give you higher page rank, hence higher search engine ranking. But there are only two catches in creating back links. One, it must be from relevant pages. Second, it must be from pages having page rank higher than or equal to three. Build more and more back links. Even if your website has only one page content, by building back links you can fool search engines in believing that your website is popular.
