10 Unexpected Interview Questions That May Baffle You: Do's and Dont'sBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Careers | Submitted: 2010-04-08 08:48:11
It would always be an advantage to be prepared for a job interview. You would answer some questions which you think are the basic ones so you already know what your answers would be. However, you may still find yourself on a spot when the hiring employer asks you some tricky questions that would sometimes feel you uncomfortable. No matter how common these interview questions are, it would still pay to be prepared to answer them as appropriately as possible to give a good impression of you. These are some of the tricky questions that may be asked during the interview and the do's and don'ts you must remember in handling them. 1. 'Tell me something about yourself.' Do: Try to let the interviewer know about the ways you know how to do things or what you can do, some basic information would do. Don't: Say anything too personal about you or the whole story about your life. 2.' Can you tell me anything bad you heard about our company?' Do: Tell them that you have not heard anything bad about their company Don't: Say anything about some gossip you might have heard about their company. 3. 'Why should we hire you?' Do: Try to emphasize to the interviewer that you know what their company needs and that you have the capabilities to provide for them, that you are the right person who can do the job. Don't: Fumble with your answers because you failed to do some research about the company. 4. 'Where do you see yourself in five years?' Do: Answer positively about how most of your capabilities, skills and experiences would help you grow with the company. Don't: Answer that you don't know, or that you haven't thought about it at all. 5. 'How would you react if I told you your interview so far was terrible?' Do: Keep your cool and try to politely ask for explanations why they think that way. Don't: Panic, cry or look frustrated. Keep in mind that the interviewer said 'if' so it may or may not be true at all. 6. 'What's the latest book you read? Do: Answer and talk about a book that would somehow reflect about your good taste preferably a book written by a well renowned author. Don't: Mention a book which you have not really read. 7. 'Are You Capable of working under pressure?' Do: Respond that you can and then you can share a short incident in which you did. Don't: Answer 'of course I can', then not providing a brief sample to relate to it. 8. 'Who's your hero?' Do: Mention a name of a person you admire and how you made this person an inspiration in your job. Don't: Show surprise on your face when you hear this question without a definite answer. 9. 'Have you ever thought of starting your own business?' Do: Mention that you achieve satisfaction and do excellent work in a company that is astoundingly comparable to the one you're applying in. Don't: Imagine about it and then say that you would like to be your own boss someday. 10. 'Would you still be working after winning the lottery?' Do: Be sincere to admit that you would be excited to win the lottery; then say that you would still find work because it makes you happy and satisfied. Don't: Answer that you would stop working (too honest) or perhaps work without some compensation. (too patronizing) Always remember to be at your best during an interview. Be cautious not to say anything bad about past employers. Try to be calm and try not to be anxious about it. Keep your focus and avoid showing body language signs of impatience, frustration or resentment. Keep in mind that most employers like to see how you respond to the questions asked of you. They want to observe how you react to their questions and judge for themselves how good you are to think on the spot. So remember to be composed, remember to smile and keep eye contact with your interviewer no matter how baffling the questions may be.
