5 smart ways to protect yourself on campus

1. Trust Your Instincts -One of the best resources we have to protect ourselves is by following our instinct. If you have a funny feeling about someone or something or your surroundings it's always best to trust your instinct and get yourself to safety. Run if you have to. don't be afraid of looking silly if it turns out that you were running for no reason. In the end it's better to be safe than sorry

2. Don't Travel Alone - Predators almost always look to single out a target who is alone. Traveling in groups will boost your safety by 150%. If you find yourself in a position where you have to walk alone, it is always acceptable to approach another student you see walking in the same direction as you and simply say "excuse me do you mind if walk with you?" Usually other students understand the importance of campus safety and won't think anything of it. If traveling alone is unavoidable, have a cell phone in your hand. If you see or feel someone suspicious call someone and let them know where you are. Let the suspicious person hear you on the phone talking. If they see you on the phone, they may choose to leave because it's to risky. They have no idea who you're talking to, where that person is, and they know the person on the other end of the phone can get help if you are unable to. You can always call campus security to escort you to your destination if you must travel alone at night.

3. Always Travel With a Cell Phone, Mace, and Alarm - Make sure your cell phone is ALWAYS charged and ON! Have the phone number to campus security stored in your phone, as well as at least one other person on campus. Pepper Spray will definitely stop an assailant in his tracks should it come to that. The best kind to have is one that clips to your key chain. A key chain personal alarm will come in handy too. The alarms can be heard up to 5 blocks away. Not only will they draw attention, but your assailant is likely to turn and run once he realizes all the attention that is drawn to him.

4. Walk Confidently - Predators always look for what appears to be a "weak" target. As you walk the campus grounds another way to deter a predator is to appear strong and confident. Stand up straight, walk strong and swift. If you are lost, don't show it. Always walk like you know where you're going. Get on your cell phone and talk and laugh loudly. You will appear as the type of person who won't go down without a fight. Get into character and become a mean "street-walker." You are no longer the prey, now your actions mimic those of the predator. Don't let your guard down and always pay constant attention to your surroundings. Know your campus. Take some time to get to know your campus grounds. Know where building entrances are. Know where there is always likely to be groups of people. Know where the security call boxes are.

5.Handle Cash and ATM's Wisely- Plan ahead and always use ATM's in the daytime that you are familiar with. Never count cash or handle money in public. If you are going somewhere and plan to spend $10, have it in a separate pocket. Don't pull out a pocketbook or a wad of cash to make your purchase Laptops have recently become an item of choice for robbers. Keep that in mind. Try and put your laptop in a back-pack that goes on your back instead of a laptop bag or other bag that clearly indicates you are carrying a laptop.

Remember to lock your doors - Always lock your doors and windows. Have your keys with your mace and alarm out and always have the key to your next destination ready to insert into the lock.
