eople are usually grateful that generic drugs are on the market. They exist for every drug on which drug majors don't have copyrights. Drug makers, especially Indian and sometimes European ones, speculate the fact that a drug patent expires in 20 years after it was given to the original maker. It then becomes free and they copy the drug formula, making generic drugs. Novartis, for instance, recently launched an innovative drug for high blood pressure, called Lotrel. Even if it's under patent, some problems exist with the patent and generic Lotrel is also on the market. It is three times cheaper than the real one. The FDA gave fancy names to generic drugs, calling them Bioequivalent or medically identically. Named like this and also cheap, they are very popular and don't raise any suspicions. They are also encouraged by president Obama who does his best to bring as many as possible in the country.

Everybody wants to believe that generic drugs are safe. We don't think that something can go wrong when the pharmacist gives us a generic drug instead of a real one. We just think that that he ran out of the real ones and we are glad to save some money. However, doctors and experts in healthcare begin to worry about generic drugs, especially about generic Lotrel which affects the heart condition. Many patients complain on forums about the damage that generic drugs do to their health. A patient says that the Wellbutrin XL antidepressant was always effective for him until his insurance company forced him to switch to the generic one, Budeprion XL.

The results were disastrous because his depression had a comeback and it was even more severe. I didn't realize how generic drugs can affect one's health until one day, when my mother, who was on generic Lotrel produced by Torrent and was, feeling fine, started feeling dizzy. At first her doctor increased her dosage, but then he realized he should lower it. Finally, he decided she should take Novartis' Lotrel and she never had a problem ever since. Then I understood that the fact that FDA approved it didn't mean that he was like the real one.

I did a little research on the internet. I found out that the professional medical bodies state it pretty clear: generic drugs are not at all like real ones. Both the American Academy of Neurology and the American Medical Association agree on this. I then tried to find out the difference between generic Lotrel and Novartis Lotrel. Apparently, no testes were made, but the FDA admits that the standards for certifying generic drugs are less rigid. Generic Lotrel, for example, has to prove that it has a blood level concentration between 80% and 125%. This are very flexible limits and you can imagine that if you take one that has 80% concentration and then you happen to buy one with 120% the consequences can turn out to be very dangerous for your health condition.

Generic drugs are fine as long as you don't use them in severe conditions. Pay extra attention to heart related conditions.
