Being Late is Wrong and Speed Limits Are For Puffs With an Empty Life.BY: Alessandro Saetta Vinci | Category: Issues | Submitted: 2011-05-19 03:53:06
Contrary to what people think I don't think it's fashionable to be late. I think it's stupid. No, you know what? I think it's fashionable to be early. Well, actually I've no idea whether it's fashionable to be early because I never am. Nor have I ever been early. Like I always say, I'd be able to show up late at my own funeral. I realize this is wrong and idiotic but I just can't help it. Whenever I've got something to do and I know I should be getting ready, to go to a party for example, I never get up, get dressed and go. What I like to do is sit down and contemplate. It appears that any excuse it's good enough for me to be late. I don't know why this is so, all I know is that even though being late never caused me any substantial damage or trouble, it definitely didn't do me any good either. And this brings me on neatly to speed limits. The other day I was forced to stay stuck behind an old BMW driven by a young chap, he was about a billion years old, who stopped at any light, including those that were green, any halt, including those which weren't actually there, every zebra crossing, including where there weren't any and he never ever went faster than the speed limit on the road. Which is in head must have been 3 mph. Now, even if I admit that I would've very much liked to get out of my car, get him out of his and then throw him in the river, I completely understand him. He's old, he's probably taken part in every single war that ever was. Including punic wars. What's more he surely has a wife who stopped talking to him in 1967, two adult children who forgot his name and his face and a couple of nieces and nephews that only call him to say "hey grandpa, gimme some money!". It's not him I'm mad at, and it's not even that Chinese bloke who always goes slowly in an old Merc. It's normal people with a normal knowledge of how a car works, with a normal job and a normal life that go slowly, on purpose. This is insane. First off, have you ever tried to abide by speed limits? It means 50 kph in towns, 90 in out of town kph and 120/130 on motorways? Every single time I try I always inevitably wind up risking an accident. Let's begin, shall we, with motorways speed limit. First of all let me say that it is a fact that in Germany (where roughly 60 % of all Autobahns in unrestricted) there are fewer motorways accidents that in most other countries and it is another fact that on the Isle of Man, where there are no speed limits at all, road safety just isn't an issue. You see, the problem is that every car has a natural cruising speed. It always happens while you're driving, you're relaxed, calm, focused and don't pay attention to the speedo. Now, look at the speedo. There you go, that's the natural cruising speed of your car. Now in cars from past it's about 50 kph, but in modern cars, namely the cars we all drive every day, it is 130 at least. Lately I've driven a Mercedes E Class Estate and its cruising speed was, and I'm not joking, 240. If I were to go any slower, I'd have to concentrate. I'd have to lift my right foot every five seconds, I'd have to look at the speedo, constantly, and I'd drive with absolutely no rationality or regularity at all. I'd constantly need to slow down, is that really that safe? Braking all the time, instead of flowing ahead? Looking at the speedo instead of looking where you're going? And what about out of town broad roads? 90 kph? Really? The only difference between a motorway and an out of town road is that on the out of town road you stand more chances of bumping into a Moose, but if that has to happen, it will happen whether you're going at 90 or 130. And trust me, it won't make any difference should you hit one. Because both you and the moose won't suffer any damage. It'll be the car that'll be into pieces. And puh-lease don't get me started on city speed limits. During the night, or where there's nobody 50 is way too slow, and where there are people and traffic and lights and children you won't be going any faster than 20 anyway, because you just physically can't. So if you have the possibility to go fast, why go slowly? If you go slowly it means that you're in no rush to go where you're going. And if you're never in a hurry it means that you never do anything you like. You're therefore useless and therefore deserve to be beheaded. On the internet, perhaps. Still, back to today's topics. Being late. I solemnly promise, with my hand in the air, that from this moment on, I'll never ever be late again. Now if you excuse me, I'm off. I've got an appointment, and I'm already 10 minutes late. Article Source: http://www.writearticles.org/ About Author / Additional Info: Comments on this article: (0 comments so far)
