Blackberry, IPhone, Facebook, Next Time I'm Going to North Korea on Holiday.BY: Alessandro Saetta Vinci | Category: Entertainment | Submitted: 2010-03-18 15:08:23
North Korea is the least free country in the world. North Koreans are not allowed to own or use mobile phones, they can drive but the majority of the population can't afford to buy a car, they did not choose their head of state, nor will they be allowed to do so in the next future. If you live there, you have the right to think as you see fit, as long as you keep your opinions to yourself. There's no freedom of press, either. If you're travelling there from a foreign country you need a special visa, which will be almost certainly be denied to you if you're travelling there from the U.S.A., and which will be hard to get anyway if you're from anywhere else in the world. And if you're South-Korean, you can not, absolutely, not under any circumstances, not in any way, shape or form access from South Korea until you get special visa and authorization from both the governments of South and North korea, which you won't get anyway. Even if you manage to go there from Europe, you'll probably be identified as a spy, get arrested or killed. And even if none of this happens, you will be assigned a tourguide and will be forced to follow him/her anywhere, you won't be able to breathe without her/him knowing it and watching you, and you won't be able to take pictures unless you're allowed to. Something you will be most of the times, not allowed to do. Not a pretty scenario, is it? You see, going to South Korea and acting like a regular western tourist, (taking pictures, wandering about in flip-flops, hitting on a local girl) is a bit like being Irish in a pub in England watching a football game, England vs Ireland: everyone will hate you for it, but is still something you can do and live with; instead doing the same thing in North Korea is like being Irish, getting inside a pub in Manchester while people are drunk and watching Manchester United vs Shamrock Rovers and screaming "Man Utd is rubbish!": you can do that as well, but there are very high chances you're not going to get out of that place alive. Still, is it really such a bad thing? I've been to many places in the world. Free countries. The result? Rubbish food and dirty streets in Spain. Arrogance and high prices in France. Bad weather in Germany. And many more problems, and all of that garnished with the people you're usually surrounded with when you travel, who are too busy checking their e-mails on their Blackberry to pay any attention to anything else. Your travel mate will always keep an eye on his facebook page, and there you go. You thought you'd left for a holiday and you find yourself eating bad expensive food under the rain while your mate is too busy catching up on Facebook to interact with you. Bloody hell! Next time I'm going to North Korea, warmer climate, a tour guide always available for you and very low prices!
