An option for business buyers worth consideration is buying a franchise. This choice is ideal for someone who is looking to own and run a business without expertise in a particular area or someone that would prefer a business where the concept is already understood and working successfully. This can offer a greater sense of belonging and security for the purchaser.

It is vital to select the correct choice of franchise which can give you a quicker and more uniformed start in terms of set up, planning and growth forecast. Normally, you would agree to trade under the brand name of the business offering you the franchise, with support and help offered. It is worth considering the value of this compared to a more straight forward business start up.

Success rates when buying a franchise tend to be higher than other business start ups though as always hard work, determination and sound business practices are required. Also, there may be a greater degree of flexibility required in order to trade within certain terms and conditions the franchisor would set.

There are various forms of franchising available. The most common type of franchising is called a business format franchise. Typically in this instance, a licence is granted to a person or business in order that their business idea may be utilised. This type of franchise is often limited to a particular geographical area which ensures your competition is not from the exact same brand. This license would usually cost an initial fee and potentially an ongoing , commission or sales percentage. The benefits include being able to trade under the name of the franchisor and ongoing support as agreed. A franchisee would normally own the outlet with control in terms of marketing and products. An obvious example of this type of franchise would be Mcdonald's.

As with any business, when Buying a business it is always important to consider any exit strategy. It is important to understand the rules around this any franchisor may have in place to ensure your requirements are compatible.
