Careers That Are Slowly Being Phased OutBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Careers | Submitted: 2010-03-19 19:12:55
The global crisis is still looming around us. Some nations are slowly trying to pick up but there are still many who are staying on the borderline of their situations. The hard times have taken its toll on us and the big impact has been on employment. There are certain jobs that are being phased out and not considered as important as they were about 10 or 15 years ago. The introduction of new innovations and technology has somehow made some careers obsolete as well. These are some of the occupations that are being phased out, and hopefully your career is not one of them! Telephone Operators have been substituted by more modern and complicated telephone systems. These systems just instruct the callers on what to do to have their calls connected. Other technology like email, voicemail and texting are also being used to communicate. The old conventional way of calling and being answered by a telephone operator is now slowly becoming a thing of the past. Bank Tellers are now needed only for person to person banking transactions when the client has a complicated problem with their bank account. The banking service is now being done electronically world-wide. The ATM and other online services are popular choices for most account holders to use due to convenience. Mail Clerks are just limited to a few. Mail nowadays is done electronically and newer methods to process mailing have been adapted. There are now bar codes to do the sorting, and there is pre-printed postage in lieu of postage stamps. File Clerks are decreasing because of new technology. There is also the environmental cause to preserve more trees by using less paper. Filing can be done electronically and a more conventional approach is being used to do away with filing paper. This new approach is via the Database Report Writer which is new software that can do a rundown of all files when needed. Data Entry Clerks were important about 10 years ago. This job required some computer and electronic processing knowledge. With the onset of more advanced computer technology this position has become less important. The various ways of integrating computer systems and their functions have resulted to faster data processing. Photo Processors are not in demand anymore. Nowadays, people can do their own printing of photos by using self- service booths or stands located in malls or offices. The dominance of digital photography, computer and other similar technology has also affected the decline of this position. Travel Agents are also affected by new technology. This position is still needed in few cases especially when long and difficult trips are planned by some vacationers. Incentives previously offered by hotels, airlines and other business that have to do with travel and bookings have lessened. Businessmen who plan short business trips and vacationers who want easy and quick trips for the weekend prefer to use the internet or online services. Watch Salesperson is fast declining. Watches also suffer some selling problems. Current time is shown on cell phones, electronic billboards and other electronic devices. Video Store Clerk is now obsolete. There are now cable movies available and online movies are also popular. DVDs are even being set aside in favor of movies on some video game consoles and other online services. New technology has brought about many changes. It paved the way for new jobs that are in line with it. Old jobs were replaced, improved and substituted with new technology. Unfortunately, other jobs basically phased out as more technology came in. Nevertheless, it does not mean that you are hopeless. Change is a good thing if you try to adapt to it, re-invent yourself, learn new skills and try to cope up with it.
