Choosing Between Parochial and Public SchoolBY: Guest User | Category: Education | Submitted: 2010-02-17 09:41:37
When you are choosing a school for your children, it's obvious that you would want to choose the best school for them. However, what the best school is for your children differs depending on your values and the schools that are available in your area. Many families find themselves choosing between a parochial and a public school. Though by strict definition a parochial school is one that is affiliated with the Catholic Church, in recent years "parochial school" has been applied to schools that have an affiliation with any religious entity or set of beliefs. Parochial schools have popped up for evangelical Christian, Jewish, and Muslim entities. The benefit of a parochial school is primarily the niche beliefs that it teaches. Because of the separation of church and state, this is generally religious in nature. However, there are parochial schools that are focused on specific skills or trades. Parents opt-in to a parochial school. This often causes families to be more involved in the school with their time, finances, and talents. Parochial schools also often have more resources than public schools because they charge tuition. While the purpose of the tuition is primarily to make up for the lack of government funding available to them, parochial schools also often receive large sums of money in donations from graduates or other stakeholders. This extra money allows them to court better teachers, provide more educational experiences for students, and get more up-to-date computers and other equipment for student- and teacher-use. Even without these benefits, public schools have some draw. Probably the most obvious is the affordability of public school. Because public schools usually don't have major differences from one another, there isn't a draw for students to attend from different neighborhoods. This has the effect of building a more tight-knit community and giving students a greater opportunity to develop friendships that will last outside of the classroom. Another benefit of public schools is the involvement of the government. Because public funds are spent on public schools, there is greater accountability from stakeholders including taxpayers and public officials. When you are deciding between sending your child to a public or parochial school, take inventory of your family's beliefs, values and resources. The first question you should consider is what values your family holds. Do you have core beliefs that you would like to instill in your children? If these values are religious in nature, they might be better reinforced through a parochial school. If you value engaging the community as well as your religion, you might find that a public school provides a great opportunity for your children to apply their faith in an atmosphere that allows them to love and serve those who don't believe what you do. What about your family's resources? Do you have the money to spend on parochial school? If not, you may find that parochial school is still an option if you are able to apply for scholarships or grants. Don't forget to think long-term as well: if a parochial school may give your child a better education, he/she may have more opportunities for college scholarships down the line. Whether you choose parochial or public school, remember that education is not only the responsibility of the school, but of the family as well. If you are not satisfied with the weaknesses that the choice you make has, you can always help supplement your child's education through other activities or through your everyday life as a family.
