'You don't get to choose your family members.' This may be true for people, but for many families, their pet is as much of a family member as the people are. And in this case, you do get to choose your pet, so you use the opportunity to determine what animal best suits your family and lifestyle.

The first animal that we will talk about is the dog. Dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and temperaments. From the Toy Poodle to the Great Dane, dogs can fit in the palm of your hand or can be larger than your other family members. From Pit Bulls to Labradors, dogs also have earned varying reputations. If you are hoping to get a dog as a family pet, make sure that you research the breed to determine if you have enough space, time, energy, and patience for the dog you would like. Dogs also require different amounts of stimulation. Pet training is a great way to engage your dog's mind while setting boundaries for acceptable behavior. Some animals have been observed to perform the behaviors that they learned, even when they are alone. This is thought to be one way that animals entertain themselves when there aren't any people or other activities available.

The next kind of animal that you might find in a pet store is a cat. The stereotype of being a 'cat person' or a 'dog person' proves true in most cases. Cats have a very different temperament than dogs. Though they require less attention in terms of walking them and having outdoor spaces for them to exercise, cats are very independent. Most cats won't give you the physical affection that dogs are known for having, and though kittens are playful, adult cats won't necessary play with you just because you have a treat for them or have a new toy. It is also very dangerous for pregnant women to be around cat feces, so if you have a cat and are planning to have a baby, the husband or an older child should plan to do most of the pet care during the pregnancy.

Another kind of animal to choose from is a rodent of gerbil. Rats, hamsters, and mice are relatively low-commitment animals that don't exhibit a lot of the social skills that cats and dogs do. They are also easily contained, so they can stay in their cages without need for walking or exercising them. One of the drawbacks of these animals is that they don't live very long, so if you have children you may find yourself consoling the kids at the loss of pets more often. These animals also carry with them fewer expenses than their larger canine and feline counterparts. With fewer food, vaccination, licensing, and medical expenses, these may be a great solution for a family on a fixed budget.

While these are the most common pets, there are also a variety of others to choose from (such as birds and reptiles). There are also animals to stay away from based on their legality. Many animals are illegal to protect them from becoming endangered or extinct, or to protect your state's ecosystem from an imbalance of prey and predators or competing species.
