Church Shouldn't Be OverwhelmingBY: Deidre Dorsett | Category: Religion | Submitted: 2010-06-28 20:58:00
I recently joined the church counsel at my church. I used to think it was cool. I mean come on, here are the people that lead the church. They get together to make choices for the church. This is how we grow. I'm the youngest one on the counsel and took a position or rather committee that everyone gets to choose that is part of the main thing. I am in charge of worship and music and this is what I have learned. The church I'm raised in is Lutheran religion. Great right? What I have learned though is that people depend on those that have been a part of the church for way too long to do everything. They are worn out. Those who will say yes are the ones that everyone seeking help goes to. How fair is this? They wonder why people get so burned out so easily. When you are counsel you can't enjoy church. The people who find something to nitpick about always come to you. This can be very disturbing. They come to you before service so you sit there not listening to the sermon. Rather, you are thinking about how you are going to fix the next thing that they have brought to your attention. Does the drama never end? I have found that too many people in church when you are on council puts their nose where it doesn't belong. I mean think about it. There are too many people who have the things that they are in control of. Rather than worry about that, you will find that they worry about the things that you are in charge of. The question I have for all of you is where is the trust people? The other thing I have learned is that some people give there all and they are taken advantage of. I have been in this predicament once too often. I say use me as the Bible tells you to do. You are supposed to make yourself available to God. Then the church steps in. They need you here, they need you there. Then you look around and feel as you are the only one who has made themselves available. You wonder where everyone else is. The last thing I have found is that church shouldn't be like this. Most people don't volunteer to do things because they are taken advantage of. They are the ones where they ask you if you do this and you find you can't get any help so you pick up the slack. This is really true of smaller churches, but I find that even bigger churches have this issue. They start playing the blame game as you are trying to do the best you can. This is why people get burned out with church. Church just shouldn't be this stressful. Many of you might read this and find that you feel the same way and know exactly what this is talking about for many of you have been in this predicament and you weren't even on the council.
