Congregations Should Have a Say

The church is to represent a community of followers who aim to learn about Christ, live like Christ, and serve the community as Christ would want. What we have found though is that in many cases, there are many who run the church such as pastors or other clergy and the church feels that they have no say.

This is something that our counsel has been facing. We make public our notes from counsel and what we voted on. We discuss which things we need to have a church meeting about. However, there are still some who feel as though things aren't given to them to decide which is really sad to believe and many leave for this matter.

God should be the ultimate leader of the church. You have a leader to be there to guide the sheep or rather the congregants, but they are not there to make all the decisions as is the case in many churches. God calls you. You do not call god and say hey I'm going to be a pastor. Everyone knows that God is the mastermind behind those who are called to lead a church.

Therefore, if you have found that a congregational member has said this to you, this is something you need to take to your counsel or board of elders. You need to ask them as well what they would have felt could be done to make the thing different. For some, it might be more announcements made or that they ask for suggestions when considering alternative ideas for things that have to be addressed.

It might mean having a monthly meeting for the congregation. This would be a time for them to voice concerns and things they want to know where it stands. Emergency meetings could be held for things that needed a vote right away. These are things that some congregations need to do to assure that the congregation feels they are in the loop. They also need to know who to talk to if they have a concern or a suggestion so that it can be taken to those who pass the yay or nay. Some of these things aren't even considered. As a body we need to look out for what is the best for everyone. Not just those who are there to lead the church. What might work for you might not be what others would like. That is why there is a voting system.

Communication is the key to any relationship and will help to reduce the problems that you have. Until you have this, you will constantly be out of the loop as how congregation members feel. Many of you will feel betrayed for they didn't come to you or the counsel or whatever you have in place. However, you have to fix that so that they are being heard even if that means that you have to go to them. This is something more churches have to take into consideration.
