Somebody said that 'laughter is the best medicine'. Funny, nobody really remembers who said that. Do you recall who might have coined that popular praise? This phrase has been quoted in many books, magazines and had been said a thousand times to people who may need to be told about it!

If you go back to the time when you were a toddler or baby, you would have been told by your elders that you were a happy baby because you laughed or giggled a lot for no reason at all. Babies do that most of the time, giggling at something they have no notions about, but they just make those happy sounds much to their liking. You would have gone through childhood with laughter and a sense of humor that may have made you popular among friends. Laughter could have been a great part of your life that made things less complicated for you.

But then things happen so laughter has ceased to be. Your sense of humor may have been lessened because of reasons you may find embarrassing to admit to yourself. If you take time to notice, you may sense that there are people who are laughing less nowadays. Why are they afraid to laugh even if they want to? Perhaps they have become more serious in life. Perhaps they don't think about anything that would make them laugh. They don't find their life funny at all. Their sense of humor has gone stale and this may be due to some reasons that have risen from inner fear. That inner fear has something to do with other people who may react and think negatively if they start to laugh at some things they find laughable contrary to others who may not find it to be so.

One reason and an inner fear that you likely have is that you don't want to be the only one doing the laughing. It happened that you laughed and nobody laughed with you. How would that make you feel? You would feel uneasy, embarrassed and confused why you are the only one laughing. You would think that your friends and other people would judge you because of what you did. That fear of you as the only one laughing is strong enough to dissuade you from doing it again. It can be construed that many people would only laugh after someone else first started it, taking the responsibility of laughing first.

Another reason is about professionalism. You are more serious at work, focused and concentrated about the daily problems attached to it. The job dominates your life style because your financial security depends on it. Laughter is set aside for fear that bringing laughter into the profession would destroy the credibility of you being a professional. Your laughter is controlled, your sense of humor is contained and you are more serious in all aspects of your life. That's how you may want it to be to practice professionalism in your own way.

A likely third reason is the fear of being the 'mean' one. This fear just makes you think twice of laughing because you are afraid of having this notion by people around you. In any case, you have to make a distinction between laughing and having a good sense of humor from that of inappropriate humor dealing with sarcasm, taunting or teasing ways. It is unfair to use humor to malign other people or cause them pain. There are more reasons to laugh about without making fun of other people.

These may be some reasons and probably fears that have made people control their laughter and sense of humor. Nevertheless, this should not be the case. As long as you are not taking offense at anyone, treating them unfairly or causing them hurt, then you must not be afraid to laugh at things you think are funny and let your sense of humor fill you more often to make life less stressful for you.
