Crime is sadly, a part of everyday life. Offline there are mugging, robbery, kidnapping, murder and many other things. Online, the crimes may not be physical but dangerous just the same and equally devastating.

With the increase of easy access to computers and internet connection, cybercrime is gaining momentum and does not seem to slow down at any rate. The Internet, as regulated as it is these days, is still as much a Wild, Wild West as it was a couple of years back, unfortunately because of the increase in new users. New virtual doors are being opened and ahead of the new users are the old and sometimes not so honest Internet users.

Cyber crime, just like offline crime, targets a person or a property. There is no immunity since most cyber crime is done by people who are, unfortunately good at what they are doing. They are fascinated by computers and what can be done by it, and they usually start educating themselves at a very early age. Attempts to protect oneself from cyber attacks are seen as intellectual challenges and cyber criminals are usually one step ahead when it comes to virtual universe.

This results in three of the most upsetting and costly cyber crime.

Malware
Malware are programs sneaked into your computer without your authorization, such as viruses, trojans, worms and spyware. These programs are sent in by the cyber criminals in order to disrupt your information systems and/or steal personal information. It can happen to computers both at home or at the office.

Malware access your computer when you visit a site dedicated to sending malware programs into one's computer. There is no telling what is going on unless you have a good anti virus, anti spyware and anti adware. Beware sites that offer you cash, gift or anything that is too good to be true.

When your personal computer is infected, you can expect a pretty problematic effects. This is especially the case if you store personal and confidential information in your PC. Malware can track your credit card numbers typed into online transactions forms, passwords typed into the system and your various PIN numbers as long as they have once been typed into your computer.

If that is what can happen to you personally, imagine the devastating effects malware infection can cause to corporate entities. The amount of money needed to do damage control is one thing, there is also the fact that sensitive information has been stolen.

The level of destruction vary from one malware program to another but in the end, one can always expect chaos, damaged system, stolen data and information.

When it comes to trojans, the programs disguised themselves as useful programs that bait users into giving them access to data that can be mined for a long time, causing long term damages.

Hacking

Hacking is when an uninvited party gain access to your system and present themselves to be you by using your online identity. Everyone has a reputation to keep, however insignificant it may seem. Hacking however, is a rick any computer has to face when it is connected to the online world.

It is extremely important to have a cyber security system built into one's computer, be it personal or corporate. Not only does it protect information, data and the information system itself, virtual security measures keep you or your company from being impersonated and ruined in the eye of the people you care about or your customers.

Moreover, nothing good can come from having your company information system hacked, as far as customers are concerned. Nobody wants to trust or deal with a business that can not protect itself. Some hackers, most of the time teenagers, may have done the hacking for betting purposes (yes, they do) to see if they can get past your big company online fences, but the effect to your business is definitely not lightweight.

Fraud

Depending mostly on the fact that the cyber world is pretty much untouchable, cyber criminals devise plenty of ways to commit fraud. This is when email messages pretending to be from people you know, from trusted entities (your bank, your company) and even security software, ask you for money or sensitive information.

Dishonest businesses also commit fraud by not delivering the goods once the money is transferred or sent, posing as sites that accepts donations, misleading customers by using a slightly different web address from the sites you usually frequent.

Cyber crime is an ongoing battle everyone is facing. The only way to find protection is by educating yourself continuously and keeping your online security measures up to date.
