Dangers of the Internet - Part IIBY: TDH Graham | Category: Entertainment | Submitted: 2011-07-18 19:01:05
The internet. Just sends chills down your spine, doesn't it? Either because you love it, can't imagine a world without it, and can't wait to stop reading this article to go back to surfing it, or because you are smart and it frightens you. I, fortunately, am the latter. If I think of the internet, I think about it in awe, and fear. And if it doesn't for you, then, oh well. You're already sucked in. It's my job to open your eyes. Which I'm sure this article won't do, just a little article by someone you have never heard of, and the only thing you can tell about them is that they have excellent grammar and spelling, on the internet, discoursing upon the perils of the internet. But the risks are there. And there aren't many rewards. I honestly would rather pet a dog than sit staring at a screen for hours on end; at least that takes some intellect. But I need to categorize some dangers of the internet. I did in my last article, and I will probably go back over some. But just as the internet is infinite, so is it's dangers. One particular danger is: downloading. If you search to download something, you will find it. Whether it is illegal or not, it is there. And it does not have a label saying "Stop! Illegal!" on it, which would be nice, but it isn't there. But I can say one thing: STAY AWAY FROM TORRENTS!!!!!!!! Torrents are the absolute definition of illegal. Do not, I repeat, NOT, get ANY of them. There is not a legal torrent. Also, do not look for "Full version games." The majority of games cost money to buy, of course, so there is no reason that they would be available legally for free. There are very few games that are purely free, and those are mostly simple ones. Full version games are generally harder to even try to get, fortunately, so they won't be slipping into your computer by accident very easily. The safest thing for games is to either get them from the company website, whether you pay for it or not, or to download a demo. A good spot for downloading demos is cnet downloads. Just search cnet downloads, and you will find it. It is great for getting free demos of games that were released directly from the creator. 96% of them are free, as well, and personally, if you don't want to shell out a couple hundred bucks for something, this is a good way, especially just to test the product, game or other software, and see if it is worth your hard earned cash. Another thing with downloading, is music. Music is wonderful, but acquiring it is not. The safest and simplest way to get them is to buy them, just like with games. Buying them could still be a scam, or illegal, but not near as likely as trying to get them for free. Is it possible to get music for free online? Yes, much easier than games. But the majority of them are illegal. With music, just buy them. They don't cost that much, though it does add up. But if you get them from itunes or some such place, then you are safe and will not have the police knocking at your door, or your school expelling you for illegal copying. To me, it is the fault of the person who posted it, but they will get you for it. The other thing is popup adds. Have good protection on your computer to attempt to prevent this, but you will still get it. If not in the form of popups, then something else. Sometimes, I accidentally click the mouse when I didn't mean to, and click on one of the seemingly harmless advertisements on the side, and get Kim Kardashians vacation photos. That's not really inappropriate, but still not what I wanted to do. And sometimes you do get inappropriate things, and sometimes you get viruses. I got a virus that killed my computer a while ago, from doing nothing more than clicking through a clean page. Remember, appearances are deceiving, particularly on the internet. There is one thing that when you are going to a page, the entire browser turns into an attempted copy of "My computer", and it pretends to do a scan on it and find tons of trojans, and adware, and viruses, and tells you to install this software to remove it. But I could tell that it wasn't my "My Computer", because I have Vista, and is in a different format, and has discs C and D, and this deceptive scam only had C and shared documents, which is not in mine. I have no idea what would have happened if I had downloaded it like it told me to. Maybe I would have gotten another protection system to go with the other six I already over-protect with. Or maybe the results wouldn't have been pretty. I hope never to find out. This article is to protect you. Hopefully, you already knew at least the majority of this, but if you didn't, I hope this may assist you in some small way. Thank you for reading this far. If you have any comments, please post them, and if you have experienced any such things, or have any advice that may help me, please post. Thank you again.
