Digital media is a broad term referring to any form of electronically stored data. This means that digital media may be used to refer to anything from a flash drive to a feature film found online. I want to focus on using digital media in the advertising sector in this article. I will not fully explain many things, however I will touch on plenty of key points. If you are an advertiser or business owner, it is a good idea to take any points you are unsure about and research them until you are an expert.

Digital media is quite obviously the new forefront of the advertising world. Newspapers have been struggling for the past several years, and their struggle has just begun. Television commercials and radio ads were far from being deadly competition to other traditional means of advertising. However, the digital media industries have grown so rapidly in the past 20 years, that it is now standard for any self respecting business to at least have a website. Demographics are not a limiting factor in this trend either. For example, the majority of people in Europe, North America and Australia use the Internet. Even for fads like Facebook, more than 50% of Facebook users are between 18 and 34 years old.

I have talked with plenty of company owners who are not sure what a banner ad is yet, they have not tried Google Adwords (even though they offer free vouchers by email), they have no clue what SEO stands for. These business owners all had something in common: Small to medium sized, compete mostly by price and reliance on personal bonds with returning customers, quite high overhead costs which leashed them, and an inefficient business plan. One thing I let them know that helped them the most was that there were people half as smart as them making several times the income, simply from taking advantage of digital media shortcuts. Instead of spending $150 on a newspaper ad (not to mention the dreaded yellow pages), people are going online with a free ad voucher and having a whole marketing interface at their fingertips that provides statistics, advice and automated procedures.

Here is a list of items you should research if you are serious about advertising:

-SEO
-Affiliate software
-Digital commercial production
-Mass mailing (newsletters, etc.)
-Providing free information on your website (the reason you are on writearticles.org!)

Happy advertising. And remember, these are not challenging things to learn - they are shortcuts.
