Environmental Issues - Demands Our Serious Attention!BY: Anisa Author | Category: Issues | Submitted: 2010-10-12 13:13:33
No doubt we are making progress in technological aspects and this advancement in technology is bringing comfort and ease in our lives. There is no problem in being happy about our developments in science and technology; however, we must not neglect an extremely serious issue that is approaching us along with this technology advancement - environmental issues. We are so busy in our lives that we generally do not bother about present environmental issues, and even if we are aware of it we choose to continue living as it is considering that these environmental issues won't affect us. This is the reason why the list of environmental issues keeps on growing and can't be resolved. Following are some of the environmental issues which, if left unattended could result in severe consequences. Global Warming Ever increasing pollution caused by the variety of gases and smoke introduced in the air due to industrial and other chemical processes has resulted in global warming. Unpredictable and frequent change in weather is just one of the many drastic climatic issues aroused due to global warming. Earthquake, floods, storms and heat waves are some of the other effects of global warming. Other than all these, the largest effect of global warming is the melting of snow tops due to which sea levels are heightening and animal life around the poles is threatened. Pollution Due to ever-growing emission of gases, industrial smoke and many other diffusible materials in the air, it is becoming difficult to take fresh breath. This is not only dangerous for human's health but also disturbs fauna and flora of the world. Resources Exhaustion With increase in population resources are consumed and wasted at a faster pace. Non-renewable resources and even sometimes renewable resources face the problem of being short for general public use. Non-renewable resources like coal, gas, oil are wasted and there is a possibility we are left with very little of it in the near future, which is truly a significant problem. Similarly, renewable resources, if not taken care of properly may leave us craving for them. For example, water wastage is a serious issue and there are many countries on the face of earth that have lesser access to regular water to meet their daily needs. This calls for a serious attention towards resources exhaustion issue. Disposing off the Waste Improperly The main environmental issue is not caused by the waste itself but due to its improper management. Waste materials like chemical waste, industrial waste, nuclear waste etc when not disposed off properly can result in many environmental problems and also health issues. The most troublesome of all these types of wastes is plastic waste, which is too tough to decompose and due to the non-availability of dumping area, disposing off plastic waste is becoming the most serious issue. Most of the plastic is dumped into ocean which is even more dangerous as it is harmful for sea life. Environmental Issues caused by Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy is no doubt a promising source however, if not used properly it may result in serious consequences. There is a need to pay utmost attention while using nuclear energy since there are visible examples where a minor emission of radiations has caused severe results. Moreover, this is even more dangerous because the effect of improper use of nuclear energy is not temporary and it not only affects the present scenario but keeps on affecting each and every new born child in the affected area, generation after generation. Population Explosion Population explosion cannot be directly categorized as an environmental issue; however, it is an all rounder problem which is not only a source of creating many environmental issues but also economical, social and demographic issues. Population growth is not only pressurizing natural resources but also disturbing the peaceful environment of the world and changing it into a crowded place. Moreover, with increase in population increase in competition is a must, which makes survival tougher. Looking at the ever-increasing number of the environmental issues caused by technological advancement, I can easily include all the above mentioned issues in the introduction chapter. This is just a snapshot which I have presented in front of you; the whole big picture is quite scary. We all must wake up and take serious steps to help save our world. No matter how we contribute, by not throwing a wrapper on the floor or by devising a plan to dump the waste properly, contribution is a must; since this is the only way we can save our planet.
