Updating status on Facebook is a daily routine for most users. Those who are considered hardcore do it even more than once a day. There is no hard and fast rules, of course, regarding how many times you should or should not update your status. But after some time spent on the networking site, you probably have figured this list out, too.

Don't Bombard People's Feeds

Some people are talkative, some people are simply quiet. You might have the tendency to share everything that is going on in your life every single time but try to hold back a little. People checking their Facebook feeds generally hope to hear from several people, and not only one person.

It is quite annoying to open your News Feed and see only one person updating his or her status every single minute. Soon you might even be the victim of 'Hide' where your friend set you into hide mode and don't have to see any of your update anymore.

Do Be Informative

If you happen to know the schedule of the next documentary everybody has been waiting for, use Facebook status to let them know. If you hear of an emergency at work or an accident near where your friends are, let them know via Facebook status.
People these days are more likely to check their Facebook feed than anything else. Any kind of news that is important, local or not, is better sent via a Facebook status.

Don't Bad Mouth People
Remember that all kinds of people have access to your Facebook status. Your spouse, your boyfriend or girlfriend, your parents, your children, your boss and many others. Posting nasty comments about a certain someone at the height of your frustration may be cathartic but the consequences are not really something you want to face later on.
Keep in mind that a person who bad mouths someone else, no matter how justified it is, never looks good in others' views.

Do Share Good News
Everybody can use good news once in a while so if you have one or heard of one, do share it. A quick tip, it is always better to share others' good news. People are more likely to congratulate and give back pats when they hear good news from someone else and they are likely to feel a little resentful when someone seems to toot their own horn.

Don't Get Personal
Again, remember that the people reading your Facebook statuses are not only your friends. (Unless you have been very strict and only accept Friend Requests from friends and not relatives, co workers, bosses and casual acquaintances.) Ask yourself if you really want your bosses to know about your love life or if you want your Mom to know you were horribly drunk last night.

Don't Whine
It is understandable that there are times when you want to share your hardships and frustration to the whole network of friends you have. Facebook however, is not the place to do it. Yes, you have all your friends there but remember that your relatives, your co workers, your bosses and casual acquaintances are also there.
Besides, nobody likes a whiner. Occasional (short!) rant is probably alright but constant complaints just turn people away from you. Not to mention the object of your complaint might be reading what you have to say, too.

Don't Be Cryptic
And don't think that you can get away with it by making your complaint vague. If anything, this turn people off even more. Nothing is more annoying than becoming worried about a friend and when you ask them, they coyly say, "Oh, nothing really."
Cryptic complaints, vague references to love life, passive aggressive posts with no clear object are status updates most people will learn to ignore. And when this happens what's the use of being on a social networking site? You might as well write in a diary.

Do Connect to People

Most people agree that the ideal use of Facebook is to stay in touch with friends and family members. Do connect with the people in your network. The best way to do it is, of course, by asking a question. Ask people for a movie recommendation, ask people about their plans for the weekend, ask people what good, easy recipe you should try when you have the time... there are so many you can ask!
