Why are you writing? Do you have a school assignment? Are you trying to write the fabled "great American novel"? Or are you just trying to get through the final few reports at work? No matter what the genre of your project is, you can find ways to personalize it with your style and make it interesting to you and others. The key for good writing is to write what you know. If you don't have a base of information and experience in a topic, you will find yourself struggling to communicate that information well. If you have control over the topic of your piece, choose something that you are interested in and that you enjoy. If you are writing for an assignment, you will need to do some legwork before you put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). While you can start outlining at this stage, don't try to compose your piece until you have finished the research stage. Another way to strengthen your writing is to write using your own voice. Even if you enjoy reading Descartes or Shakespeare, if you are only used to writing emails, then you shouldn't attempt to imitate their writing style. To get a sense of what your writing should sound like, record yourself talking about the subject. After a few minutes, start writing about some of the ideas that you just talked about. Then compare the two. If your writing takes on a drastically different tone than your tape recording does, you are likely skewing your own voice to suit what you think the piece should sound like. In most cases, readers will pick up on strange cadences or awkward vocabulary. Writing also involves being mindful of grammar and spelling. Writing is a tool. It helps us convey concepts, thoughts and ideas. Like any tool, writing has certain components that can indicate whether the person knows how to complete their craft. Ideally, the writing itself will not get in the way of the transmittal of the ideas and concepts. If you have incorrectly placed periods, commas, hyphens, et cetera, then the reader will be less likely to fully understand your point. Anything that gets in the way of the communication of your ideas should be eliminated. Of course, talking about the right things is also crucial. The genre that you are writing for will give you the main parameters for your content. Make sure you know what is expected of the content, but then let your imagination run. If you are writing about something that interests you, you likely won't need to do much in preparation for actually writing. However, if the subject matter is unfamiliar, you may want to do some research or brainstorming before you start writing. If you find yourself rambling, or are unable to focus your thoughts on a specific topic, you may need to spend more time on the research and brainstorming phase. Once you have the general outline of what you want to talk about, the key to writing in your own voice is not letting anything interrupt you. Don't re-start the research phase; if you are unsure of a fact or statistic, make a note to come back to it. If you begin reading other people's writing again, you will risk integrating their style into your own. And ultimately, the reason we write is to tell a story, convey an idea, or clarify a concept that hasn't been addressed adequately before.
