Are you ready to get started on that New Year's resolution? Or are you already regretting having given up on it? Getting into shape is one of the most common New Year's resolutions made, and because this fact remains true year after year, we know it's also one of the most common New Year's resolutions that are broken.

Exercise is extremely important to our health and well-being. The immediate benefits are obvious. Your metabolism goes up, you get a rush of endorphins when you exercise, and you feel like you have more energy. Long-term, you lessen your risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and a myriad of other illnesses.

But even knowing these benefits, a lot of people just can't seem to continue their exercise program. One reason for this is that people don't take into consideration their own personality and lifestyle when they choose a way to exercise. There are many things to think about: your finances, the time you have available, what you enjoy doing (both physical activity and other things), and your social style all make an impact on a person's exercise stick-to-itiveness.

The first thing to consider before starting an exercise program is your physical needs. This includes the areas of your body that you would like to refine, as well as the physical limitations you have. Even injuries from decades ago can affect your ability to complete an exercise program. For example, a broken foot from your first year of high school can create calcium deposits on the bone. During later exercise, these calcium deposits can rub and cause pain or discomfort in that foot. An exercise program that adjusts to find other ways to exercise the same muscles can save you a lot of time, frustration, and pain.

Another thing to consider for your exercise routine is your social needs. If you are a 'people person' and love being with other people, you may find it hard to go walk on a treadmill for an hour while everyone around you has the iPod in. Instead, consider doing a group class that will give you a chance to talk to the people around you and build friendships.

The third thing to take into account is your intellectual needs. If you get bored easily, consider taking up a specialized exercise routine like Shaolin Kempo or another martial art. Martial arts provide a great way to get your exercise in while requiring you to achieve certain intellectual benchmarks. They also keep your mind active by mixing up your exercise routine and requiring you to be fully engaged in what you are doing (instead of mentally making your shopping list as you finish your last set of weights).

Along with these and other considerations like your available finances and time, you can determine what exercise program you are most likely to stick with. Brainstorm a few different options, observe or try out a few sessions, and talk to people who have been using that form of exercise for a while. This will give you the greatest chance of success in your new exercise routine.
