No body is born perfect. When we are born we know nothing. It is our environment which teaches us how to live our lives. As we grow up we learn things and make our personalities. This process involves many people and objects. Self-enlightenment is something but generally there is a least possibility that some one get the idea about something without observing, reading or being taught by somebody else. There are some main characters like those who are close to us, our parents, friends, siblings, teachers and some secondary characters like acquaintances, colleagues, etc but we learn something from everyone no matter how least involve he/she is in our lives. This builds our personality. What we are today is a reflection of our life's experiences, observations and interaction with others.

Of course all of us want to improve. We don't want to stay at the same position for our whole lives. We want to groom ourselves to stay competitive and it is also important as it gives a new meaning to our lives otherwise our life would be like stagnant water that starts smelling. Now the question is how one can improve? But before answering this we need to identify that whether one can improve or not? John Dewey put it beautifully: "The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action." Therefore it is obvious that one can improve by practicing right course of action. But to determine that which course of action will be considered right in a particular case, one need to start the process of improvement.

Well, congratulations the journey has begun. To take the first step you need to know yourself. Yes, knowing oneself is a very important step while developing ones personality. If you don't know yourself, despite all your efforts you can't improve because the course of action which you have selected might be wrong. So start with understanding yourself. First of all you need to know your personality type. There are two broad categories of personality types: introverts and extroverts. Introverts are those people who are more comfortable with themselves. This doesn't mean that they are shy but indeed they need energy from within themselves. If they spend sometime in a social gathering they need to speak to themselves afterwards to recharge whereas, extroverts are just the opposite. They are social bees and get energy from interacting with others. They are outspoken and bold. For both the personality types it is not recommended to change oneself, because anyhow change is even not possible. What one can do is to bring in a little bit alteration to improve. For introverts it is advisable that they should mingle up with people and also give sometime to themselves. They should practice to say 'no' and must stick to what they believe is right otherwise they will be pressurized by others. Whereas extroverts must try to be accommodating and should try to avoid attitude problems like anger, "know-it-all" attitude because it has been observed that if a person is a bit bold he/she doesn't appreciates others worth. This must be avoided and extrovert must try to learn new things to enhance their charisma.

To understand yourself you can also go for any personality test available free on the internet. This will help you know about yourself and identify which characteristics are present in you and which are absent, thus making it easy for you to work on yourself to develop your personality. You will be astonished to note that there are many questions about your own personality which you find difficult to answer because you have never thought about them and you don't know it, although it is about your own self. This points out towards the importance of understanding ourselves. You need to answer all the questions from your own viewpoint that is, how you feel about yourself and not what people say about you. At the end of the quiz you will get the results about yourself and you will know what you lack and which aspects of your personality need to be polished. Be open to the results and accept it. Here begins your journey towards self improvement!
