Global Racism IssuesBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Issues | Submitted: 2010-02-18 03:35:29
Racism has been a problem since time immemorial. Racism is based on the belief that there are some racial groups that are more superior and more exceptional than the others. It is also based on the belief that the individuality and character traits and skills of a person are based solely on their race. This has further resulted to discriminations of different people categories such as the Black, Asian, Hispanics, Arabs, Muslims and other mixed races. Both racism and discrimination has been effectively used as controlling weapons that spread more fear, hatred and indifference during clashes and disputes among nations and also in global economic problems and decline. The issue of racism is a delicate subject for most people. To talk about this topic would lead to other issues such as free speech and showing prejudice towards the race. Arguments come into play when racism is openly discussed because some people or nations may take the discussion out of context. Some may misunderstand what the others may be expressing as only ideas and concerns; still others may take such discussions as offensive and downright degrading. For some, it may lead to more complicated consequences such as war, economic bans and other similar factors. One of the most thought about places where racism still exists is Europe. This may be so because Europe is a place with so many entwined cultures in such one confined and relatively small area. The Neo-Nazism is still being felt and other ethnic groups that have settled in Europe have also their own experiences of racism. The source as to why racism came about is unclear. Some attributed it to the European exploration and most especially after Christopher Columbus discovered America. As more of the aborigines and natural inhabitants of the these lands were subdued and conquered, more outside people came into the conquered lands; thus setting the pace of 'racism', distinguishing the new people as the more superior race over the original ones who were conquered as the inferior race. Racism may also have been used to differentiate the people who were in power and who were rich from those who belonged to the other racial group. Another theory attributed it to Charles Darwin Theory of evolution. Some mistook the theory to mean that there are biological factors to influence the intelligence and moral traits of a certain race, thereby those with lower intellectual capacities were considered the inferior race. Though this concept is controversial and considered untrue, it has already made its damaging effects about the meaning of racism. The land of Down under- Australia has been considered much attuned to racism. There was a time that Australia was Apartheid causing more of its original inhabitants to lose their lands to their conquerors. The original inhabitants- the Aboriginals are the poorest group of people in Australia. They suffer from racism and extreme prejudice. To date, Australia has over come its apartheid practices. Many of the Australians are openly friends with different nationalities in their country. Prejudice is somehow slowly being eradicated in schools, jobs and social functions. However, there are still a few conservative and conventional politicians who are still openly racist in their attitudes. Racism is also being felt in America, in the Uk and in some other parts of the world. Even in the new modern world that we are in, with all the new technology and innovations that we have, racism is still an issue. It is just a matter of attitude, a matter of choice and having a good understanding of how you must deal with it. You just don't let racism become a part of your life.
