Did you know that dealing with difficult people can be detrimental to your health, and that dealing with them can arise to conflict? Well, it is and it can do enough harm to your mental, physical and emotional health. It would be a good thought to know of some good ways to deal with difficult people and prevent conflict as well.

1. If you are in a conversation try to stick to general topics. Avoid initiating topics which would have different opinions such as religion, politics and other similar controversial issues. If you feel you are being provoked to a discussion that would turn into a heated argument, try to change the topic or make excuses to leave the area.

2. Remember that dealing with difficult people does not mean you have to change that person into something he or she is not. It would only give way to more heated discussions, criticisms and diverse opinions.

3. You can work on your responses to the other person you have difficulty dealing with. You can impose on a subtle way that you don't agree when the other person uses offensive behavior. Try to be more assertive in your responses to let the other person know the limits of such unacceptable behavior to you.

4. You may need to understand that most difficulties arise because of two conflicting personalities that may be equal in intelligence, skills and experiences. It does not always mean that the other person is bad so there is difficulty in dealing with this person.

5. Try to focus on the positive traits of difficult people especially if they are part of your family. This would somehow ease the tension between the both of you and the other person would feel respected and loved.

6. Accept the negative aspects of the other person. Try to accept their weakness and just remember to deal with them on a more positive way. If you know that this person likes to gossip, then don't talk about confidential matters or if this person is unreliable to help, then don't ask for help. This would help you avoid further conflict later on.

7. Try to get what you need from someone else. Look for someone else who can help you if you need to talk about confidential matters. Seek out and talk to a close friend who would be willing to listen to you and whom you can trust with confidential matters. Seek help from other people who can provide you support and help that you have known to have already helped others. You can write a journal about your feelings and this is an effective way to stress out. All these would help ease out the difficult relationship you have with the other person and avoiding conflict in the process.

8. You should know when it's time to keep away from the other person. If you can't get along well, you might as well keep away or find ways to lessen contact with each other. Make your reasons clear as to why you may be cutting ties with this person. If the person is a co-worker or your boss, you can request to be assigned to another section or you may consider changing jobs if need be.

In real life, you would have to deal with some difficult people. You just have to be strong and assertive to your own beliefs that you can surpass these difficulties without too many conflicts. Remember not to blame yourself or the other person if you can't get along well; maybe it's just that your personalities don't match well. Try to look at the more positive side of life and inject some witty humor in all your activities. Humor relieves some stressful moments and it helps you and the other person feel more comfortable around each other. Remember to be courteous and show appropriate respect to others. Be open to encourage more positive and healthful relationships with others to balance the negative ones.
