There are many who love their pastors. They do a good job at what they do. Yet, there are some churches where the pastor might not be doing as much as they think they should be doing. We have been in that situation before and can tell you, a person's opinion might differ greatly.

Now, we know of the basic things that a pastor should be doing. Everyone expects that pastor to give counsel. They are to give communion. They are to lead service. On top of that, they are supposed to go see those that can't come to church and visit those who are in the hospital. So, those are the basics. Now, what about the not so basic?

There are many who say that the pastor should do everything and they are fine with that. The pastor also might wish for it to be this way. They might sort of form a dictatorship and some view them as in charge of the church. What the pastor says; goes. However, there are many who feel differently.

There are some who feel that the pastor shouldn't be the head of the church but an equal member of the church. Therefore, when tough decisions should be made, the whole church should have a say. Most of the time, this is how it is. This is how it should be.

If you look at Biblical times and you look at the first church you will see that there was a leader which you would define as the pastor. There was also what was called a tribe. This was a group of members who made important decisions and together, with the pastor they did this. You might know these as the council or elders.

Now, some wonder how it's better for the church members to be in control of the church. Too often in our lives we are taught to solely depend on one person to do everything. However, this isn't the best thing to do. Why is this? This is because when the pastor does everything, you learn to do nothing. A pastor will only stay for so long as the head of the church before they either move on or pass away. So, what happens then?

When a pastor leaves, you will find that the period to find a new one is very lengthy. You just can't pick a person and that is that. There is a huge process that you need to go through. What happens when the pastor is the sole person to make decisions, you find that people then don't know how to do things. When the new pastor steps in and asks who did this or how did you used to do this, every one looks at one another and says well I don't know the pastor did it. So, think about it. How much the pastor should be doing? It's something to really think about and many don't. They want the pastor to do more and more. However, the pastor has to be in the picture and doing those things that are expected and trust us when we tell you that there are some who aren't doing that.
