How to Become a Successful Freelance Writer!BY: Anisa Author | Category: Careers | Submitted: 2010-06-24 23:32:04
Choosing to be a freelance writer is not easy because one can't be sure of the work flow and stability. Unlike nine to five jobs where you have surety that you will get a fixed pay on monthly basis, you can't say how many projects you will secure being a freelance writer. At times there is an extreme work load whereas at times you don't have sufficient projects to earn a handsome amount. Nevertheless there are certain tips which can help you maintain a constant work flow and thus a promising career as a freelance writer: • Make your profile. This is the very first step to be successful because through your profile, clients and buyers get to know about you, your qualification and your experience and can compare your expertise with their projects. • Write some samples on general topics; remember samples are just to depict your writing style (including how you use grammar, punctuation, spelling etc) and material selection relevant to your topic; so you can select any topic to write a sample. It is better to have separate samples to be presented along with the bid for articles, press release, resume writing etc. • It's better to take some skill tests available on the freelance websites which you decide to join. There are general tests about freelancing as well as specific test for English proficiency, grammar and spelling check etc. Some tests are free of cost whereas to take some you need to pay a few dollars. Start with free ones and then you can move on. These tests are a good way to show your expertise to the clients. • Bid on the projects you feel are most relevant to your field so that you can do your best. Always try to produce best quality work to impress the client. • When you are new don't expect that people will start giving you work instantly, reason being buyers don't know you and your work and similar to a traditional job, in freelancing you need to make a position as well. So be patient and don't feel discouraged if you don't get any project in the initial weeks. Keep on trying. • When you have just joined this career don't expect too high rates, also don't give too high bids. Once you have made your position, it would be much easier to get high rates similar to what happened in traditional jobs i.e. initially your salary package is not that high but you get bonuses and raises with the passage of time. • Meeting deadline is one of the most important criteria to ensure a constant work flow. Only if you meet deadlines, you can get work from the similar buyer again. • Get ready to accept the challenge. As you move on in this field you will find that there are topics which you have never heard about. Have a look around, search the internet; you will definitely get what you are looking for. Improve your research skills so that you can cover many topics. • After you have submitted 3 to 5 projects, and your writing skills have been improved, start bidding on more diverse topics whose data is available on the internet. • Start building your team. As one can't be expert in all areas so add such members in your team who have a different field, background and experience so that you can take many projects. • Although how much you will get paid depends upon the buyer, his pay rate and your conversation with him/her but generally articles pay lesser than web content. Moreover e-books pay higher if you get it directly from the client (and not from the third party) and academic writing pay pretty good. Of course all these tips will only ensure constant work flow and a handsome pay if you produce quality work. If you don't work properly or fail to meet deadline every time or are far below the expectations of the clients, you will not get work and you can't succeed in your career as a freelance writer. So once you have identified the writing spark in yourself and have decided to join this field, be committed and work steadfastly, success will be yours!
