The nine long months of expectation and excitement are over. There you are, now going through another healthy and happy beginning of childbirth. Especially if this is your first time, embarking on the first stage of being a full-fledged mother might be full of anxiety. Take on lesson number one - how to breastfeed. Learning how to breastfeed is one of the most vital lessons every mother should take. The mother's milk is very critical in strengthening your baby's immune system, and is the most recommended feeding, including those who are premature and sick infants. Your breast milk is a complete source of nutrients your baby needs for the next six months of life. Thus, it is also important to learn how to breastfeed to ensure that your baby could have all the breast milk you could lovingly provide. First step on how to breastfeed is to latch your baby properly onto your breast. A correct latch-on is very crucial in milk production and to reduce pain while breastfeeding. In latching your baby, get your baby's mouth to open wide by brushing your nipple to your baby's lips. Once open, pull him onto your breast, while holding him closely with your arms. Do not move yourself towards the baby, instead, pull him closer towards you. A right latch-on should have the baby's lips to be rolled out as they have tendencies to pull their lips inwardly. If this happens, press down your baby's chin to turn the pursed lips outwardly. Another characteristic of a good latch-on is that your breast touches your baby's chin and nose. Moreover, check if your baby's tongue is under your nipple. The gum of your baby should cover the areola to some extent. You should not feel any pain if you have just correctly learn how to breastfeed. But in the event that you and your baby feels discomfort while breastfeeding, remove your baby and try again latching your baby onto your breast. Never let your baby continue to feed incorrectly as this could result to painful nipples. Lactation is directly proportional to the frequency the baby is fed. In other words, breast milk supply has something to do with the baby's demand for milk. Hence, to ensure that more milk are produced, breastfeed your baby in as much as you can. Proper breast care should also be observe by all mothers, especially when breastfeeding. After every feeding, let your breast air dry. Do not use soap or alcohol in cleansing your nipples. Rinsing in water is sufficient enough. Breastfeeding doesn't only provide the much needed nutrients for the baby, but also gives time for the mother and her baby to spend some quality time for bonding. Adding to the list, breastfeeding mothers also has a low risk of having breast cancer. Doctors are also recommending mothers to breastfeed as it s a natural form of contraception. There are, indeed, numerous reasons for mothers to provide breast milk for their babies. Needless to say, gaining knowledge on how to breastfeed correctly is but a prerequisite for every mothers.
