How to Make Young Children Nurture Their Reading SkillsBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Education | Submitted: 2010-04-07 01:08:30
There may be some adults who may have difficulty with their reading skills. This problem could be traced back to their early childhood. Perhaps they were not encouraged to read nor were they guided to do so. The early intervention in reading could have reduced this kind of problem if only their elders knew about its benefits. One of the essential benefits you can derive from this is ensuring the good development of the reading faculties of the children, enabling them to learn and understand easily and this would also set the tone if they need extra help in this kind of skill. There are some good and basic tips to help young children nurture their reading skills: 1. Try to introduce reading to them as a fun activity. Make it enjoyable and interesting for them. You can combine some games and fun activities when reading. Reading time for children should be highly stimulating and not demanding or hectic for them. 2. As a parent, you must carefully choose the books and other reading materials you want for your children to read. Remember to choose books with plenty of colors, interesting pictures and simple to recognize and appreciate. It may also depend on the age of the children and their ability to identify their liking for books. Make sure to choose books which your children can be familiar with and recognize easily. Your books must be written in big letters and with many illustrations. 3. You must guide the children in understanding the words being read. You can explain the words to their level of understanding, and try to make a relationship or link between the written words and the oral words. 4. As you progress on your reading, try to strengthen your child's skill in word recognition later on. It may be repetitive in some cases, but then it might be worth it so they would remember and would be able to understand the meaning of the words and correlate these to what they are reading. 5. Allow for constant reading, make time for it and encourage reading as often as you can. You and your child can take turns reading to each other as a sort of bonding time. Remember that the one who reads more becomes the better reader, and also becomes more familiar with difficult words. 6. Try to bring in the basic alphabet principles. Try to teach and make your child understand that words are made up of alphabets. Help them learn the alphabet; assist them to be familiar with the alphabetical letters and the sounds they correspond to. 7. When you think your child is ready to read independently, then allow them to read on their own. Just be on hand to guide them in case there is some difficulty that may be encountered. Let them nurture their reading and comprehension capabilities but be there to support them along the way. 8. Always remember the power of motivation. In developing their reading skills, try to think of ways to stimulate and encourage them. You can give praises if they are able to read properly or you can give them some form of rewards, simple things like a new book, a new toy or some extra time for playtime. The responsibility of encouraging young children to read at the early stage of their life can be challenging and sometimes difficult. Nonetheless, think of the long range benefits of this. The early intervention in reading would help reduce future reading problems. You would realize that the time, patience and commitment you do to help nurture your child's reading skills would be beneficial after all.
