Hybrid Car - The Latest Eco-Friendly Car TechnologyBY: Guest User | Category: Technology | Submitted: 2010-03-19 21:51:51
A new type of car has recently showed up on the market and it is contributing to a better environment. It does this by not polluting the environment, as regular cars do and is called Zero Emission Vehicle. To put it simpler, it is actually a battery operated car. It is revolutionary indeed, but not everybody can afford one. For those who can't buy one, but still care about the environment, there are super ultra low emissions vehicles, otherwise known as hybrid cars. What is a hybrid car after all? It is a car based on an innovative concept of using more than one power source. It usually uses two: gas and electric power. The two systems work together in order to make the car competitive. Besides of the common question about what is a hybrid car, another important thing is which the hybrid cars are. The models that instantly come to our mind are Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. You should ask yourself more than just what is a hybrid car. Only the definition is not enough to fully understand the concept of this car. You should understand why running on two power sources makes it better. The classic engine that relies on internal combustion and that all the other cars have also needs transmission in order to work. It functions at its best only at a certain speed. But we all know that keeping a constant speed is impossible even on the highway, let alone the traffic in the big cities. When running at different speeds the classic engine is not at all efficient. So, on a hybrid car the producers put this classic engine in a common size, usually one and a half liter and they determine the speed at which it is optimal. They also put an electric engine which is powered by some batteries. This comes in when the other one is not efficient. You probably know that the regular engine is not doing well when you start the car. A hybrid car gets started by the electric engine and when you run slowly this is the one that operates. When you reach a speed of 15 miles per hour, the gas engines also starts operating. This way the gas engine only works in optimal conditions. The producers can this way use light material for it, as it is not runs in bad conditions, so the whole car will be lighter. Now you know what is a hybrid car and how does it work. It is an innovative product in the car industry that uses available technology in order to obtain excellent results without affecting the environment. The core of a hybrid care is the set of planetary gears. These are the ones that make the two engines work together and sharing the load among them. This is why a hybrid car does not need a transmission or a start button. One cannot talk about what is a hybrid car without mentioning the planetary gears.
