Identity Theft Protection - The Nuts and Bolts of ItBY: Guest User | Category: Issues | Submitted: 2010-04-04 21:43:30
Identity theft scammers got a tremendous help from the Internet and the technology becoming cheaper every day. Shoulder-surfing and dumpster diving are only two of the simple techniques that criminals use to steal credit card numbers or other sensitive information. Once they acquire such information, it can be a matter of seconds to send it to another part of the world, and then to empty innocent peoples' accounts. Identity theft has been increasing steadily and ordinary Americans are in danger as never before: only last year almost a million people were targets of identity theft attacks. The good news is that identity theft protection is equally booming. To protect yourself, you need to know something about how identity thieves operate. Identity theft protection can be as simple as forming a habit of avoiding to do the wrong things. Perhaps the most important thing to do is to keep a close eye on your social security card. If it falls into the wrong hands, you might find yourself with huge credit card debts. A criminal armed with your social security card can easily open a bank account in your name, get some new credit cards and start spending fast. And then simply run away. If you think that all the important communications to or from your bank are safe, think again. Sure, they might be safe in your house or at their destination, but how long do they just lie in your mailbox for everyone to get them if they really wanted to? If you are serious about identity theft protection, you might rather not mail your checks right from home. Identity theft protection is basically about leaving no paper trail about your transactions or payments. Every credit card receipt, ATM receipt, or check that you carelessly throw into the mailbox or into the trash bin at the supermarket is an invitation for thieves to steal your identity. And don't think that they are too shy to search the trash: criminals will just pay the janitors good money to let them have a look at such garbage. Checking the credit card bills line by line can be a tedious affair. But if you are serious about identity theft protection, you will do it each and every time. Any purchase that you don't remember having done should instantly sound off your alarms. Dispute any such charge immediately and then cancel that card before you get into even more trouble. In fact, for a good identity theft protection, you would be even better off by joining a service such as Experian Credit Check that will always check your credit card report for any strange charges. You might be surprised to learn that an identity theft attack is not always high-tech. More often than not, it is a very simple thing such as a phone call that sounds very much like from a real bank, recorded messages and all that. Just that it is not from a bank, but from a scam. And all that you might win by giving them your PIN number is a brand new debt and lots of trouble. The good news is that identity theft protection can be just as simple and low-tech as the attack itself: don't ever key in your PIN number or give away such sensitive information over the phone. No matter how genuine that call seems to be, no matter how attractive the telemarketing offer sounds, just don't give away sensitive information. It can be as simple as that to have your identity theft protection always on.
