Remember those days when you were leafing through the phone book to look up a number? The big and shiny phone book used to be delivered every year to everyone who had a residential phone in the house. And by the time the next edition arrived, the previous one had been so intensively used that it looked already beaten and tattered. Back in those days, looking up a number meant always searching in the phone book, but now this has changed. The Internet is one great alternative to the phone book.

Back in the days of the phone book, you would usually write down the numbers most important for you in the special section at the end of the book. Now you don't have to trouble with that anymore: most probably the numbers that you called more than once are already in the contact list in your cell phone. When you need a number, you can simply open your cell phone and search in the contact list. Opening your phone and clicking a few buttons is certainly faster than searching the number in the phone book. And you can actually call anybody in your contact list without even dialing or seeing the actual number: all you have to do is to click the right name in the list and your cell phone will make the call. No wonder that you might not actually know by heart the numbers that you call frequently: you just don't have to know them.

The problem with the phone book in your cell phone is that it works only for people or businesses that you contacted before. But what to do when you need to find out the number of a person or business with which you've never had contact before? One option is of course to look up the number in the printed phone book in your house. You might find there what you need, but then again you might actually not find the correct information: the printed phone book is updated only once per year. To be sure of finding the latest information, you can always check instead the listings online. They even are similar to the phone book that you have at home: it's the same white and yellow pages, just that they are online and updated much more often, and you can find all the information in a single place.

Searching in the phone book online is not only more convenient, but also much faster. No more reading the tiny print in the phone book, no more searching through the page, no more wondering whether the number is still valid. All it takes to find what you want online is to type the name of the person or company that you are looking for and hit enter. And you don't even have to go necessarily to the white or yellow pages website first. You can as well type the name and some keywords in a search engine and let it pull up the numbers for you. It might even find for you additional information such as a map or other details that could be useful to make sure that the number found is indeed corresponding to the exact person or business that you were searching for.

You might still get every year the phone book delivered to your door, but it stopped being the best way to find out phone numbers today. In some rare cases, you might find in the paper book the number of some people that opted out of being listed online. For all the other cases, searching for somebody online will be much faster and the information that you get is likely to be more reliable and complete. But don't throw away your paper book just yet: it might still prove useful from time to time. Just move it perhaps a bit further from the phone and leave it there to be around just in case.
