Is Organic Really the Best Thing for You?BY: Guest User | Category: Food | Submitted: 2010-02-24 19:48:40
'Buy organic!' The phrase yells at you from the food sitting on the grocery store shelves. In most cases, organic foods are more expensive, but we tend to believe that there is something inherently better for us in organic foods. What is it about organic that makes us willing to pay more for, essentially, the same thing? Organic foods are those that are made according to set standards. Most of the time, they don't use herbicides, pesticides, or insecticides, and for animal-based foods, the use of growth hormones are restricted. These regulations were put in place to help people make informed decisions about what foods to purchase so that they know about the risks they are posing to themselves and their loved ones. There are health benefits to using organic foods. Because the term 'organic' is highly regulated, you can be sure of what you are putting into your body. The pesticides and other chemicals that are used in foods that aren't organic can build up in your system over time. Studies of farmers who use pesticides have shown that they are more likely to develop memory disorders, issues with their respiratory system, cancer, and depression. Pregnant women who are routinely exposed to pesticides have a higher chance of miscarriages and birth defects. The cost of organic foods is higher for the consumer primarily because the cost to produce organic foods is high. Because organic foods have an additional set of regulations, producers have to spend money to make sure that they remain in accordance with organic standards. This can affect the amount of space needed to house animals, the kinds of food that can be fed to the animals, and the breeds of animals that are used. Producers are also at an economic disadvantage because many organic food suppliers are family owned or are small in scale. This means that they lose money on the chances for bulk buying, and they have to send their products in smaller amounts so that they lose money on packing and shipping costs. Related issues that are affected by the organic food movement include the 'think globally, act locally' and 'buy local' campaigns. These campaigns focus on the change that people can make in their own sphere of influence, with the hope that if enough people act in their own lives, it will filter through to the rest of the world. The buy local campaign emphasizes the negative effects of buying food that is produced far away. For example, if the chicken that you are having for dinner was raised in a different state, the waste produced by the raising, packaging, and shipping of that chicken is a lot higher than that of a chicken that was raised only a couple counties away. The organic craze has also spurred a number of other clarified-marketing branches. 'Natural' foods are considered a step below organic. They usually aren't processed (at least as much as they can get away with consider why kind of food it is) and don't have any artificial sweeteners, flavors or colors. Natural foods also are made without the use of antibiotics or hormones. The problem with 'natural' food is that this term is not regulated by the USDA or the FDA. This means that while producers won't use it on everything, there's nothing that guarantees that the description above will actually apply to your 'natural' crackers.
