It is Not Extra Sleep That You Need But Quality Sleep!BY: Anisa Author | Category: Health | Submitted: 2010-10-15 02:41:37
Sleep is a body mechanism that helps us stay relaxed, calm and gives us energy to perform our routine tasks. This also keeps us stress free and maintains our body temperature. Sleep is a wonderful thing but one must understand the fact that it is quality sleep which bring marvels to our lives and not the uncomfortable sleep. Sleeping in an uncomfortable manner, on an uncomfortable bed or pillow or waking up again and again while sleeping are all the things which leaves us tired and desiring for more. Therefore taking comfortable sleep is truly required. We all have certain things about sleep in our minds which may be right or wrong; however, following wrong perceptions about sleep may weaken our sleep mechanism and also sometimes makes our immune system weak. There is a need to follow the right sleeping patterns where one takes a proper, complete and relaxed sleep. Following are a few things which one could have in his or her mind regarding sleep and a discussion on whether these are true or not! Many people think that if they haven't had a proper sleep from quite sometime and they have not taken a complete sleep of 6 to 8 hours per night, they are required to catch up on sleep for the hours they have missed. However, this is a wrong perception and except those who haven't slept for nights like those on marathon or those who haven't slept due to any emergency or any such situation, others are not required to catch up the missed hours. Remember, it is only the initial 3 to 4 hours of sleep when our body gains all the energy and sleep deeply. If you haven't taken this much sleep then you may need to catch it up later on, otherwise its ok. Second thing which most of us think is that sleeping longer leaves us full of energy; however, this is very wrong. You can experience it yourself, when you sleep more than your regular time you don't feel like doing any work after you wake up and dizziness lingers around you the whole day long. Sleeping longer than usual is an unhealthy practice which disturbs our sleep mechanism and body routine. It disturbs our body temperature rhythm and limits our chances of facing the right sunlight which is very beneficial for healthy living. Moreover, it stresses our mind and lessens the strength of our immune system. Simple fact is that sleeping longer steals away all the energy we require to perform our daily routine tasks properly. Therefore, one must understand the importance of sleeping lesser but quality. Another thing which most of us think is that if we are feeling low we think sleep will bring us energy. This is true in case one is not feeling well or is sick, especially in case of cold and flue however, in normal circumstances this isn't actually a right practice. Sleeping just because you are not in a mood to carry out your routine tasks is not a right way as it not only leaves you more tired but will also disturbs your sleeping patterns. At that time listening to music or doing your favorite thing or eating something, is a better option than to sleep. Because sleeping at that hour will not only damage your sleep mechanism but will also lowers your energy levels. Now when you know these basic sleeping facts you must try to reduce your sleep and take comfortable sleep. Quality sleep is the thing you need and not more sleep. Try following to make your sleep comfortable: Make a comfortable bed for yourself. Take a relaxing pillow. Everyone has their own priority, some people feel relaxed on extremely soft pillows whereas some prefer a little stiffer pillow. Don't go for co-sleeping (sharing a single bed) if you don't feel comfortable in that or if it disturbs you during night. Many researches have shown that couples sleeping in separate beds have more comfortable night than those who sleep together. Try to give a separate bed to your elder kids and a separate swinging bed to too young ones. Go to bathroom and refresh yourself before going to bed so that you may not need to wake up in midnight. Don't take alcohol or caffeinated drinks before you go to bed, they are the real sleep snatchers. Wear comfortable clothes while sleeping and remove any jewelry or makeup you may have so as to have a comfortable night.
