Social networking is one of the biggest draw of the Internet. You get to meet a lot of people and get do it at the comfort of your own house. There is no need to dress up or look your best and when you don't like who you are talking to, you can simply log out and find someone else at some other sites.

Because of the many opportunities, chances of hitting it off with others are increased significantly and you get to find people you actually like. This, however, come with a downside. There are unscrupulous people out there who are not above faking friendships in order to take advantage of you or directly harm you.

As far as possible, explain to them the consequences of these dishonest people getting a hold of your names, address and/or telephone number.

Teach Them to Identify Inappropriate Comments or Acts

Online child predators are savvy with their language when they talk to children. They envoke sympathy or pity and usually pose as fellow children. They coat their advances in dubious terms and send your children on guilt trips in order to get your kids to respond.

Let your children know they are not responsible for any action done by someone else. Tell them to be alert when someone is accusing them of something in order to get what she or he want from your children. Tell them not to do anything they feel uncomfortable about.

Let Them Know Where to Go When They Come Across Inappropriate Acts or Comments
Once you are sure they know these acts and/or comments are unacceptable, make sure that they know they need to report it to you or other trusted parties like teachers or coaches.

Keep Them from Downloading Things from Suspect Websites
Teach your children to be discerning when it comes to visiting websites, not to mention downloading things from such sites. Popular downloading sites are ripe with malware- and virus-infected files. These sites are prime target for cyber criminals to sneak in their worms, trojans and other harmful programs, which will be attached to the files users download to their computers.

Tell your kids to beware too good to be true websites, as well as those which come with pop up windows. Tell them to come to you when they are not sure about the safety of a certain website.
