The 2011 New England Patriots draft. Wow. Let's break it down:

# 17 overall: Nate Solder. Nate Solder is a solid pick. Offensive line is a position where the Patriots are a little thin. Look at their O-Line. With Nick Kaczur 31, with injury problems, and Matt Light 32, Logan Mankins disgruntled and 29, Dan Koppen 31, Stephen Neal 34, Sebastion Vollmer at 26 is the youngest Offensive Lineman definitely capable of starting for the future. Even Dan Connoly is 28, and Mark LeVoir is 28. Even the backups are old. I like the big. Solder is a big tackle. Hew as one of the three finalists in 2010 for the Outland Award, best interior lineman in college.

#33 overall: Ras-I Dowling. Again, the Patriots addressed an issue in picking Dowling. They would love a young, good cornerback to play opposite McCourty. Right now they have Darius Butler and Kyle Arrington, who played well, but not at that level that you look for. They are very good backups at this point. Belichick at least wants competition at the CB. And that's what he will have. Dowling was 2010 Pre-season All-ACC selection and second team All-American. Decent pick.

#56 overall: Shane Vereen. This pick is a little more doubtful. Running Back was not an area of weakness for the Patriots. They have BenJarvus Green-Ellis, the workhorse, and they have Danny Woodhead, the speed back. Then they have veterans like Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor that can fill in. Some people said that the Patriots should have taken Mark Ingram with the 27th pick, instead of trading it to the Saints. The one thing I like about the Vereen pick, he's not a lead back. He should fit in, get his reps, and hopefully grow into a regular contributer. I'm okay with this pick.

#73 overall: Stevan Ridley. Another Running Back. I do sort of understand; the Patriots are aging at th Running Back. To work their committee approach, they will have to have young backs. I like their committee, I just don't think they need two RBs when they already have to good ones. Ridley is another player who will hopefully fall in.

#74 overall: Ryan Mallett. Ryan Mallett. What else can you say? Great talent, it is stunning that he fell this far. He was projected to go in the first round, even as the best QB the draft had to offer, yet six QBs were taken before him. In 2010, Mallett finished 7th for the Heisman Trophy. Seventh. Wow. And he fell to #74. It has been said that the Patriots don't need Mallet, as they have Brady and Brian Hoyer. But Belichick always wants competition, and he sure has it. Also, his personality is an issue, but so was Randy Moss', and how did that work out?

They also picked Marcus Cannon, Lee Smith, Markell Carter, and Malcolm Williams.

People complain about Belichick's mistakes, like not picking Clay Matthews when he could have, instead trading it to the Packers. People will complain just the same if Ingram turns out to be a star. People also forget what Belichick has gotten. People complained when he picked Jerod Mayo. Wow. They were surprised over the McCourty pick. Wow again. And with the Patrick Chung pick. Chung was huge last year. What about taking the leap and taking the unhealthy Rob Gronkowski. Ten touchdowns? He makes a lot of questionable decisions, but the majority turns out well. In Bill I trust. Thank you.
