Believe it or not, food is not just about nutrition. Chances are that you know this already. Everybody carries with them different values they hold for and experiences that they have solely because of the food they eat. Throughout the world, cultures are defined not only by their languages and traditions, but because of their food. When it comes to our own families, we also create memories and purpose based on the foods that we make and enjoy together.

Family traditions follow us through generations. Many of these traditions develop because of food, or around a meal. Christmas dinners, birthday parties, weddings, and less event-oriented traditions all belie our reliance on and enjoyment of food. Have you ever walked into a room and smelled something that brought back a memory for you? Many times, this olfactory memory is based on a strong experience that occurred while you were eating. If this is the case, we might as well work towards creating positive family memories by taking advantage of the body's built-in memory trigger.

Creating a family tradition is a relatively simple thing to do, but it does require some planning and persistence. My family has a few different food-based traditions. On Christmas Eve, we eat Chinese food together on the good china. This tradition started because my mom is one of nine kids. You can probably imagine how hectic Christmas Eve would be with that many kids (not to mention a normal family dinner!). Because of this, her parents started getting Chinese take-out on Christmas Eve. It was an easy meal, relatively inexpensive, and simple to clean up. Though our family has modified the tradition somewhat, it still remains ingrained in our collective memory and gives us a sense of connectedness.

Another family tradition that I have is a cookie bake. At the beginning of December each year, my cousins get together with my grandma to make cookies. But these aren't just chocolate chip cookies; we make the traditional cookies from our lands of heritage using the recipes that were written down by my great-great grandmother. At the end of the morning, each cousin is sent home with a plate mounded high with sweets, and new memories of time spent together with family.

The key to making something a family tradition is not just in the repeated task. If that were the case, one could reasonable argue that putting on your shoes in the morning is a family tradition. What makes something a tradition is the meaning that is held in the action. To get some ideas, do a little bit of research about your own heritage. Discover what unique things your family has done in the past, and bring them into the lives of your family now.

The next time you open your cupboard, instead of just having a meal together, by adding a few elements of connection with one another or with your heritage, you can create a family tradition that will bring memories to your mind and the minds of your kids long after that meal is over.
