Miata in British Racing GreenBY: Alessandro Saetta Vinci | Category: Cars, Bikes and Trucks | Submitted: 2011-07-02 05:46:29
I have to be completely honest here. I was expecting a lot more from the Miata. As I'm writing, my "brand new" Mazda Miata is parked outside and I'm trying to look at it from every possible angle and curve to figure out a way to call it good looking. Because it isn't that. It's the NB model, the one in between the first one with pop up headlights and the last, Audi TT-lookalike, Miata and I have to admit, despite having just spent SOME thousand euros on it, it's the ugliest of the three. You can call it a classic, charming, fun, cute, silly but you can't call it beautiful. It's a bit like Asia Argento, she may as well be charismatic, weird, interesting and in some respects, she might even be sexy, but gorgeous? She's not. It's the same with my Miata. It's the right colour, British Racing Green, and with the roof down it just feels righteous. But it isn't pretty. Then, we have to talk about comfort and practicality. Or better yet, the lack of them. But we will not, chiefly because you already know that a two seater roadster can't be that practical or comfortable so it's pointless to even mention it, but mostly because I don't care. I've always loved small, low, rigid, naked roadsters. Now you'll probably expect me to praise its stupendous dynamic abilities, the 0-60 time and, in general terms, its performances. But I'm afraid I can't, cause things look poor here as well. Yes, it's very light, roughly a ton to be precise, but it only has 110 hp so the top speed it's just under 125 mph and the 0-60 time is just under 10 seconds. A diesel Chevrolet Captiva can do better. I hated this car when I first went for a spin before buying it. It was a small drive through town at rush hour and it was hateful. It was hot, the car was way too low to make it even possible to look at what's going on in traffic, it swallows fuel like water and the ride is so stiff your back shatters into pieces. I once had the chance to drive for about a month a Daihatsu Copen which, apart from the front wheel drive system, it's exactly the same as a Miata and I fell in love with that the instant I got in the car, but with this? I wish I'd stayed home. Driving any Kia or Hyunday would've been more fun than driving the Miata in traffic. Actually driving anything would've been more fun that driving the Miata in traffic. Come to think of it, anything would've been more rewarding. Including falling down the stairs and being hit with a hammer in the back of your head. Then the other day, namely yesterday, I was heading home and decided to take a small detour by driving on a narrow and curvy road that crosses some barley fields and the Miata started to make a good amount of sense. The steering is so precise, the car is always perfectly balanced and controllable, the gearbox is a pearl, the engine entirely changes its attitude when you reach above 5.500 rpm, the sun sets and you can enjoy the wind in your hair because there is no roof. It's all there for a reason. And then it hit me. Yes, other cars are more practicable and comfortable and yes, other cars are prettier and more fashionable as well, but what's the point? I'm not driving this car for other people's benefit, I'm driving it for me. Because I love driving it. The end.
