Minding the State of Your Home When You Are Out of StateBY: Guest User | Category: Travel | Submitted: 2010-02-24 10:03:51
When you go on a vacation, the last thing you want to think about is whether or not you left the stove on. This and other risks that you take when you go on vacation can take your attention off of the relaxation and rest that you seek and can turn your vacation into just another place to worry. By making the right preparations before you go on vacation, you can ensure that your home is safe while you are away. One of the most important things to take advantage of when you are going on vacation is your relationships. Your friends and neighbors will look out for you and your home while you are away. This can be as simple as dropping by the neighbor's house on your way out to let them know that you are going to be gone, to being as complex as providing them with a key and documents with contact information for emergencies. Your neighbors are a natural first line of defense for caring for your home. If they are aware that you are going to be gone, they can keep an eye out for things that would seem normal under other circumstances, but would seem odd when they know that you're gone. Neighbors can also be proactive in ensuring your home is safe. Convicted burglars have shared that they often use seemingly benign strategies to notice whether or not people are home. One such strategy is to leave a flyer on your doorstep. If it isn't picked up in a day or two, it is a good guess that the person is not home. This makes an empty home an easy target for robberies. Your neighbor can easily drop by your home to pick up flyers and newspapers, empty your mailbox, and even turn on lights at certain times of the day. Technology also provides us with ways to keep your home safe while you are travelling. Electrical timers can turn on lights in the evening. There are also devices that will imitate the flickering and noise of a television, but will not use as much energy or pose the risk of leaving your television on the entire time that you are gone. Another more obvious technology to keep your home safe from potential burglars is by using a professional security system. Most security companies will provide a window sticker or sign for your front yard that will help to deter potential burglars. The other aspect of keeping your home safe is general maintenance issues. This includes taking care of pets, plants, and food. If you have a friend or neighbor who is able to stop by your home once a day, they can take care of the living things in your home while ensuring that the leftover soup from last week doesn't go moldy in the refrigerator. With a little bit for forethought, you can plan for your home's maintenance and security through utilizing the latest technology and asking for the help of friends and neighbors. Whether you are travelling for pleasure or business, you can ensure your home is safe and that you keep your peace of mind.
