Old School Hobbies Find Resurgence in Educated WomenBY: Guest User | Category: Women | Submitted: 2010-02-26 11:00:46
Kelly looks at the clock to see how much time she has left. She is bent over her sewing machine, working on a quilt to be given as a gift at her cousin's baby shower. Her husband will be home from work in a couple of hours, and she wants to make sure that she has enough time to put together dinner for him and tidy up the house a bit before he gets home. No, this isn't the 1950s. Instead, this is the present day and Kelly graduated from a dual-Master's program as the valedictorian. Yet when she is not helping patients in a clinic or hospital, she seeks out opportunities to use her creativity in seemingly archaic ways. The journey of women over time has gone through many changes. From the Victorian Era to the hippies of the 60s, from colonial times to the present day, women have taken on many different roles. Since the feminist movement, women have trended toward working in jobs that require as much education and experience as their male counterparts. Though salaries for women are still on average lower than those of men, most women don't hesitate to take on the same professional challenges than men do. High schools no longer offer home economics classes as part of their required curriculum; they have been relegated to the fringes of elective courses. This may be one reason that it is surprising that women are going back to more traditional hobbies. The success of stores like Michael's and Joann's Crafts are one indicator of the fact that women are spending more time making their house a home. Television shows that air on HGTV (Home and Garden Television) are another. One reason that women may be making this shift is because of the sudden influx of technology in our lives. While technology has been around for a long time, the recent additions of social networking, YouTube, Facebook, and blogs, coupled with devices like iPhones, WiFi, and laptops that increase our accessibility to these programs, have created a culture in which it is difficult to be separated from technology at any point. Both rote and creative activities that get women away from technology like this give women the opportunity to rest and stimulate their different interests. The simplicity of knitting or the creativity of sewing give women a chance to connect with other women while doing something productive for their own home or the homes of others. For women who are used to dealing with the complexities of business, medicine, and other professional fields, having a moment to set aside those thoughts gives them a chance to reconnect with the other aspects of their personalities. While some feminists may see this as a step back, the crux of feminism was earning the right to choose one's own path. Instead of being pigeonholed into a certain occupation or role in society, women now have the choice between using their professional skills or focusing on more simple and traditional activities.
