One State Could Lead by Example For Future Schools.BY: Deidre Dorsett | Category: Others | Submitted: 2010-06-19 18:36:25
There are a few things that one school system is doing in Indiana to ensure that students get the sort of education that they need. What is this you ask? You might be impressed to know because this might be what happens to other across the country when the states come in to whip them into shape. • One of the first changes they have made was readjusting the system of administrators. High schools in this district have seen one principal booted and not replaced by someone else. Next year, when classes resume, there are going to be initial changes in administration. There will be a new principals and assistant principals in all the schools just to shake things up a bit. • Due to the things that these students need to learn, the school day is going to be different as well. One of the first things that you are going to find is that not only are there going to be new administration, but the school day is going to be longer as well. Instead of the natural dismissal at three o'clock in the afternoon, school will be let out at four thirty in the afternoon. • Budget cuts also had to be made. Therefore, some schools have gone to paying in order to play sports that they love. This way they can bring in some money for those sports and the school isn't funding them out of their own pocket. • Those schools that scored an unacceptable when the school board came through to grade the schools had to apply for a grant. This money would go for a better curriculum and other things that are needed to make sure that students learn all that they can learn. While many are happy for the steps that have been taken thus far, there are some who don't know if this is actually going to help all that much. When you look at the home life for most of these schools and the students that attend these schools, some begin to wonder if this is enough. There are many who feel that the state can do all they want, but to truly see a difference in the scores, there's going to have to be some improvements in the lives of those kids. Until then, things will stay the same. • Eventual plans if things don't change for this one district might be to take the rather small district to cut costs in a very extreme way. This would be to shut down the individual high schools that are scattered around and put all of these students into one high school. The same would happen with the middle school as well. Not only would costs be cut, but the state could then hand pick the teachers they want in this school to make things happen. Here is just a glimpse of things that could be happening in other states. While many teachers were pink slipped including those young and new to the scene teachers, state will have a say that is hired next. Could this actually help the schools that aren't living up to their standards?
