Have you ever been to Sea World? Watching Shamu jump out of the water and perform spins and slaps is enough to inspire awe in anyone. What is even more intriguing in the fact that those tiny people can go into the water and safely swim with such a giant animal. But the key to making this happen with a killer whale is the same thing that enables people and dogs to live together: training.

The goal of pet training is to help us live with our furry companions. By encouraging certain behaviors and discouraging others, we let our pets know what appropriate and inappropriate behavior is. We also make it easier for more situation-specific needs like having your dog lay down still for an injection from the veterinarian, or keeping your dog from running across a busy street.

There are four major pieces to pet training: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, negative punishment. As you read these descriptions, use the following descriptions to help you remember what each kind means: 'positive' means adding something; 'negative' means taking something away; 'reinforcement' means that we like the behavior; 'punishment' means that we dislike the behavior.

Positive reinforcement means that we are giving the dog something in order to reward him/her for a behavior that we want. A simple example is giving a dog a treat for sitting. To train this behavior, you can either 'capture' the behavior (by giving the dog a treat every time he/she sits, even when you didn't ask for it), or you can train the behavior by having the dog follow the treat as you move it toward him/her. Eventually, you can phase this hand movement out and reduce it to just a slight movement of pointing down.

Positive punishment means that you are giving the dog something it doesn't like in order to get rid of a behavior that you don't like. This would be like smacking the dog's muzzle for barking. This can also be taken to the extreme of beating or abusing a dog. While the light application of this technique can help modify your dog's behavior, it is often hard to draw the line between what is appropriate and necessary for training, and what becomes abuse. For this reason, this is often the last method used for training.

Negative reinforcement involves taking something away that the dog doesn't like, in order to reward him/her for something you want him/her to repeat. This is a difficult method to use for regular training because it is hard to remove something solely based on the dog's behavior. One example of this is that if your dog is outside in the rain, when he/she stops barking you let your dog inside. In this case, you are rewarding the dog for not barking by removing the rain.

Negative punishment means that you are taking something away that the dog likes in order to decrease the occurrences of a behavior. This could take the form of you taking away the dog's bone if he is barking too much, or removing his favorite toy because he is getting too wild in the house.

With the appropriate mix of these four methods of training, you can help your dog live at peace with your family.
