Philippine Politics: A Circus With Lots of Entertainment in ItBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Politics | Submitted: 2010-04-25 18:15:35
The Philippines (my home country) is now having election fever. This is the local term the filipino media uses because everyhting is hot; the campaigns, the political rallies and everything else that go with holding elections. We're voting for a President, Vice President, 12 senators, various congressmen and various representatives all over the country. Most of these are re-electionists, some are new, others are family members of some political clans, some local actresses and actors, businessmen and some are laymen. You may think all kinds of people are running for different local positions; well, it is true and that is why this election is considered to be a one wild circus on its own. Just to give you an idea about Philippine politics, well, think dirty. Well, sad to say so but it really is. Every candidate has to say something bad or worst against each other. Some even dig up everything about family secrets way back during the Spanish times, or some creative politicians have their creative people invent some scrupulous stories if they can't find any old historical background against their opponents. Then think cheat, cheating in the biggest sense of the word. We have a backward kind of voting system. For years, everone voted using a ballot, then the ballots are counted manually..yes manually by tired teachers who can only be the trusted ones to do the counting. It would take many weeks to know which candidate won which position. Currently, we are automated, for the first time we are going to use automated voting system which took a lot of effort, time, money and advertisement to let the people know about the procedures. Well, I thought, by being automated, we would know the results in about a day or two, just like in the US. To my disgust, it would still take about 2 or 3 weeks, give or take a month to declare if we have a valid President based on the correct counting of ballots! So why is Phillipine politics considered a circus? Okay, define circus first. A circus is a group of people who give fun and entertainment, they come and go,,,the most popular in the circus are the clowns... To the Philippine counterparts, the politicians are like the clowns, they give fun and entertainment (but then not really, they can be boring) they tell jokes, sing, dance, do comedy skits and may even do some magic tricks! Anything to please the crowd; or should I say anything to get a VOTE! Aside from them, they also hire other entertainers such as professional singers, dancers, local actors and popular personalities to provide more entertainment. After the fun, more entertainment follows as the politicians then give their speeches of promise and pledges to bring food, jobs and comfort to the common people. I would be voting come May 10, the election day. It is an important day for me because I would be using my right and previlege to choose the right person to lead my country. Maybe just like other Filipinos, we may not be swayed by all the circus fun and entertainment; rather we are more focused on the issues, accomplishments and future plans of these candidates. But at the moment, everyone is enjoying the circus. So be it, but as the ending is nearing and the circus is about to end, then it is time to assert the kind of people who are in this circus, focus and judge them, and hopefully thier acting as clowns would just be limited to the circus that is ongoing. Hopefully, the clowns disappear, and the real good candidates would show up.
