Presumptuousness is Not a Flaw. (Nor an Easy Word to Spell For That Matter)

Jose Mourinho is, by far away, the best football manager in the world.

For two main reasons: first there are his honours, he's only 47, a very young age for a manager, and he's already won more than the majority of his colleagues.
In fact the only manager to have won more than he has is Italian, but he's 60-something and after the recent piteous performance that Italy delivered at the 2010 World Cup it's hard to see what's more has he got to give to or take from football.
Anyway, the second reason is that Mourinho managed to give a rebirth, a sparkle, a glow to a profession that was considered boring and practised by aging, balding and fat men.

Never mind his results, however brilliant they are, and they are indeed.
Everyone; the press, the audience, the fans, the opponents, everyone is just waiting for him to speak.

Every photographer is waiting for him to frown, or shout, or twirl to express disappointment for a missed shot, or to sulk in a very theatrical manner to immortalize him in a picture.

Every journalist is craving his words. Fans worship him. Enemies, and he has many, admire him.

Is he a pleasant person? No.
Is he a particularly nice person? No.
Is he humble? Not at all he isn't.
And that's the whole point.

Can you think of any successful person who's not presumptuous, arrogant and self-centred? I don't think so.

Now I know some of you might say that Ghandi, or Mandela or people like them are not the least bit cocky. Yes, I'll concede that.
But they're not successful people. They're men that tried to be heroes or turned out to be without trying, and that's different.

I'm sorry but quite frankly I can't imagine Nelson Mandela spending his days in prison saying "God, I'm so satisfied of myself and it was all worth it"
For as much as I respect the man.
And I do.

I'm not talking about Mandela, though. I'm talking about people who are the best at what they do.

Michael Schumacher is, possibly, the best racing driver ever, does he look like a person you'd like to have a coffee with?

That's why I've sat down, looked at my articles, looked at my recent past, looked at Mourinho, Ibrahimovic, Hamilton, Schumacher, Liam Gallagher and realized I've gone soft.

The first article I ever got published on a magazine that was actually on paper, and not online, was about a Lotus Elise, and I've got that published because I sent an e-mail to the director of the publication saying, and I'm quoting, "I DEMAND you publish my article now".
I had sent a couple of e-mails before that one and had received no answer, he did respond to this one though. He said that my piece was already in the outline of the following issue and pointed out that my forthcoming "debut" in the editorial word of printed magazines had nothing to do with my "demand". He also said that that is a serious publication, not kindergarten. And he's right. I felt incredibly childish and idiotic for that e-mail, but I knew it would work. All my life I've been pretty much a pretentious guy and whenever I am, things work out well, when I'm not they don't.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not a screamer, I don't feel compelled to attack people and bite their noses off if they don't comply with my whiny requests, but being pretty confident with a dash of pure and clever arrogance usually helps out. That's why whenever someone tells me or told me, and thank God they do and did, "Hey, you imbecile. You're the most idiotically presumptuous person I know" my response is always "Wow! Thanks, mate!"

So think about your idol, that person you would like to resemble. We all have one, no shame in that.
What's he/she like?

I've never met a drummer, and I've met many, who doesn't deeply respect and worship Travis Barker.
If you've got a mate who'd like to become a rap star, don't be surprised if they look up to 50 cent, or Eminem or Jay-z.
Are these names showing any humble person yet?
Are you a young footballer?
Is Cristiano Ronaldo a mild and humble fellow?

And don't think this doesn't involve YOU.
If you're reading this, it means that you're here, on this website, therefore I shall presume you're a writer or author or journalist wannabe.
Just like me, really.

Every professional journalist I've met is a selfish, ego maniac who likes to talk a lot, but never listen.

If you want to succeed, and I know I do, you have to be a bit of an egomaniac, you have to trust yourself before everyone else, and you have to be ready to see enemies pile up.

I shall conclude now, but before I do conclude consider this; if you're here and you're British, or simply a Top Gear fan I might assume the person you look up to, for the job he has and how he does it is, without a shadow of doubt, Jeremy Clarkson.

And he's the most terrifyingly, astonishingly, undoubtedly, hatefully presumptuous human being alive.

I'm betting that's exactly why you like Top Gear so much.
