Preventive Measures Against Age SpotsBY: Evelyn Lalisan | Category: Health | Submitted: 2010-03-10 19:36:13
The skin is prone to all kinds of harm. Extreme weather factors like heat, wind and cold can damage the skin. As we age the skin ages, too. It is an accepted fact that people who reach the age of 40 and above are susceptible to more skin problems. One of the most common problems that may have something to do with age is having age spots on the skin. As we age the skin has a slower regeneration and metabolism so that the skin becomes dry, wrinkled and at times form blemishes that are noticeable on most parts of the body like the face, hands, feet, back and neck. The age spots are also known as liver spots. They are formed because of the old age factor and too much exposure to the sun. There may be some good preventive measures in getting rid of age spots. It would take a lot of time to do so and patience is needed to pursue that goal. The age spots can be prevented when you take care of your body and take healthful measures to help it regenerate itself. If you want to get rid of age spots, then you have to protect yourself from the sun. There have been studies that the sun is a major factor that causes the skin to have more irregular skin pigmentations. You have to stay out of the sun and if you can't, do wear protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen or sun block. Always protect your face with wide hats, caps, scarves or use an umbrella when you are out. Wear long sleeves, long skirts and pants to protect the other parts of your body. Use a sunscreen with a high SPF that goes well with your skin tone and comfortable for you to put on. You may also use some topical creams that have Alpha Hydroxyl Acids (AHA) which are effective in reducing age spots. These creams are also effective to reduce scars, wrinkles, acnes and other skin blemishes. You may buy these creams over the counter but it would be better to still consult your dermatologist to know if these are okay for you. You may have to take a lot of Vitamin A supplements since these are important body nutrients that keep the skin healthy. Take foods rich in vitamin A. The Retinoid, which are synthetically sourced directly from Vitamin A are effective to get rid of age spots. It was found out in some health studies and research that high amounts of Vitamin A can exfoliate the skin naturally, peeling off the old skin thereby getting rid of age spots, blemishes, scars and wrinkles. Then there are also chemical peels which can be bought over the counter. The pharmacist can make one for you. However, it would be safe for you to first consult a doctor about chemical peels to avoid unnecessary problems. Chemical peeling can be painful so it would be safer that a qualified doctor would have to perform it on you. Try to use more Cocoa Butter. This is a natural substance that nourishes the skin. Use skin lotions or creams rich in cocoa butter to keep your skin from being dry. If age spots are becoming a big problem for you, there are also some other cosmetic skin treatment procedures which you can avail of. The soft tissue augmentation is one method where the skin is injected with collagen. The collagen is a natural substance found in your body that binds cells to form new skin. The injection of more collagen into the skin would help in the formation of newer and healthier skin. Then there is a non-invasive method known as the Non-Ablative Skin Rejuvenation that makes use of natural low levels of light to stimulate old skin cells. This new technology requires about 8 to ten repetitions complemented with the use and application of skin creams enriched with vitamins for better results. There is also a procedure known as Microdermabrasion. This method has a metal brush with very fine bristles that is applied over the skin area where the age spots, wrinkles or scars are located. This can effectively scrub away dead skin cells and facilitate the growth of newer and younger -looking skin. There are other complicated methods to get rid of age spots including surgery and laser. It would be good to start taking care of your skin as early as possible. Always eat a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, do exercise and live a healthy life style. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. All these would naturally help keep your skin protected. We cannot really escape having age spots because genetically we all age and having them is part of the age process. But we can delay, slow down and reduce the occurrence of age spots on the skin by taking some good preventive measures to gradually help us get ready to that phase that we are going to accept age spots in our life.
