Revision - The Most Important Aspect in WritingBY: Anisa Author | Category: Writing | Submitted: 2010-07-15 22:30:42
Writing is only useful when the reader can understand its purpose and can get the message communicated in that piece of writing completely. There are many ways by which one can improve his writing skills. In this article we will discuss the importance of 'revision' as a way to improve your writing which is the most important aspect declared by the many professionals and researchers. Michael Lee said about revision that "The first draft reveals the art, revision reveals the artist". Revision means to see thing in more detail, again and again so that the flaws can be identified and reduced and a perfect draft can be produced. Like Joseph Pulitzer said, "I would rather have one article a day of this sort; and these ten or twenty lines might readily represent a whole day's hard work in the way of concentrated, intense thinking and revision, polish of style, weighing of words." With our written message we are communicating with others in written form, thus we don't have an opportunity to make the reader understand what they haven't understood after reading our piece of writing therefore it must clear and understandable. The other person can only get the meaning hidden in your writing by reading the passage or page. Thus make your writing as easy and understandable as possible so as to make sure you have communicated the message to the reader completely. Below are some of the guidelines that can help you improve your writing skills, especially when it comes to academic writing: 1. Remember it is not mandatory to include everything, especially while doing your thesis or any other detailed work. Some people include just everything which is not the right way because especially thesis is your answer to the questions in a debatable manner. 2. Citation, markers as well as transitions are mandatory in academic writing so that the reader can follow your arguments and points along with the source you have consulted. 3. Don't forget to point out the main points from your research paper as they help supporting your arguments. 4. While highlighting your points you must have to provide the sources from where you have gathered those points. 5. Answer every question, like who, where, when, what, why and how while discussing the topic. 6. At the end, be sure that everything in the draft is perfect and up to the standard of English Language. Your draft must be simple and understandable. Though you have done everything to get the perfect draft but still there is a need to go back and revise it for a few times. You might have noticed that you find revision too boring and thus tend to skip many things in anticipation that they are correct but never underestimate the importance of revision as it might be possible that you have missed something which you will catch while revising. Revision helps you catch the flaws and is utmost necessary to get a magnificent piece of writing. This is for sure that when you revise, you change some of the points and it will continue unless and until the perfect piece of writing originates. Following are a few stages that are involved in the process. • The first stage of revising the draft gives you a chance to rearrange the ideas according to your need at first sight. • Secondly you check whether the draft is giving a perfect sense or not by reading the details of the draft. If you find anything which you think is irrelevant you remove it from the draft at this stage. • Thirdly you revise your draft for spelling mistakes, punctuations and other minor errors by proof reading which is utmost important in writing. Below are some more tips that can be helpful in revision: 1. Take help from your professors, colleagues, family members or the professional writers to improve your writing. 2. While preparing your draft you can take help from other sources as well (other than what you have cited in your writing) but don't forget your original source; keep referring to the one you have already mentioned in your writing. 3. It is recommended to make an outline of your draft after completing it and then paste it somewhere where you can look at it regularly like your cupboard etc for a day or two and then re-read it; read it aloud so that you can hear it too so as to see if it makes perfect sequence.
